Who am I?

I'm Shaun Donaghy, I'm a mindfulness teacher and host the podcasts Mindfulness for Beginners and Mindfulness for Gamers. I practice in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese monk who came to the west to try and stop the Vietnam War - he written many excellent books about mindfulness. I love creating podcasts, I think its a great format for telling stories and that's the aim of what I do - to make mindfulness accessible and fun through telling interesting stories. I've been hosting Mindfulness for Beginners for four years and over 200 episodes. I started doing yoga as a way to prevent running injuries and found that I got a sense of calm from it that I'd never experienced before. After doing some investigation I came across mindfulness 15 years ago and after attending a meditation group found that for the first time in my life I was able to let go of the anxiety that I felt. It had such an impact on my life that I wanted to share the practice with as many people as I can - for the last few years I've been teaching and helping people to get started in meditation. Its a real joy to see people benefit from the practice - just ten minutes a day for a month can have a fundamental impact on your mental health

What is my podcast playlist about?

This is a playlist of podcasts from incredible teachers of meditation and mindfulness. There's so many great teachers out there it's hard to keep it to just five! Its really important when you're developing your meditation practice to hear from lots of perspectives and expose yourself to other people who on the same path. A lot of what I've learned is from great teachers but its also from friends and fellow practitioners. What I like is that you can hear from those that take a very practical view of meditation and the benefits for your mental health but also those who see it as meeting a spiritual need that is sometimes lacking in the modern world. I like both perspectives!

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Tara Brach

Why this podcast?

Tara Brach is a really relatable teacher who tells stories from her own life in order to illustrate concepts. One of her most powerful concepts is radical acceptance - the idea of saying "yes" to events in our lives (even the difficult ones) and our thoughts (even the difficult ones!). By saying yes we're not agreeing or disagreeing, we're simply accepting that reality is reality - the first step towards letting go of our suffering.

2. The Way Out Is In

Why this podcast?

"The Way Out is In" is co-hosted by Brother Phap Huu, Thich Nhat Hanh's personal attendant for 17 years and the abbot of Plum Village's Upper Hamlet, and Jo Confino, who works at the intersection of personal transformation and systems change. As someone who practices in the Plum Village tradition, this podcast offers great insights into Thich Nhat Hanh's view of the world. Brother Phap Huu explains complex ideas in very simple ways and with great humour and honesty. When I stayed at the Plum Village Buddhist monastery in France his wonderful teaching style and calmness were incredible to experience.

4. Ten Percent Happier with Dan Harris

Why this podcast?

This almost feels like its 'too easy' a pick as its a popular show but its worth listening to if you haven't already. What distinguishes Harris is his approachability; he's really just a normal person who practises meditation. He has anxieties and struggles like the rest of us, and that can sometimes feel missing in those who share the practice. Through his excellent podcast, Harris delves into the intricacies of happiness, offering a unique blend of discussions infused with Buddhist wisdom and practical insights. While some episodes delve deeply into Buddhist philosophy, others explore broader themes such as anxiety, meditation, and mindfulness, making it an indispensable resource for anyone seeking solace and clarity in the modern world.

Dan Harris is a fidgety, skeptical journalist who had a panic attack on live national television, which led him to try something he otherwise never would have considered: meditation. He went on to write the bestselling book, 10% Happier. On this show, Dan talks with eminent meditation teachers, top scientists, and even the odd celebrity. Guests include everyone from His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Brené Brown to Karamo from Queer Eye. On some episodes, Dan ventures into the deep end of the pool, covering subjects such as enlightenment and psychedelics. On other episodes, it’s science-based techniques for issues such as anxiety, productivity, and relationships. Dan's approach is seemingly modest, but secretly radical: happiness is a skill you can train, just like working your bicep in the gym. Your progress may be incremental at first, but like any good investment, it compounds over time.

New episodes come out every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for free. Listen 1-week early and to all episodes ad-free with Wondery+ or Amazon Music with a Prime membership or Amazon Music Unlimited subscription.

5. Mindfulness for gamers

Why this podcast?

Yes, cheeky I know to pick my own... The reason I picked this is because mindfulness and meditation podcasts tend to be aimed at an older audience. Not unreasonable as those that are interested tend to be 40 plus - the demographics on my other podcast confirm this. I think we are facing a mental health crisis in younger people, particularly after the pandemic, and its really important to make mindfulness as accessible as we can so that they have another tool to support their wellbeing. I like games and they're a great vehicle to communicate concepts within mindfulness - Pokemon was a great way to talk through anxiety, I'll be talking about how Minecraft can teach us the power of gratitude. Why not give it a try?
