The best podcasts for Community Building

Who am I?

I'm passionate about intentional community design, member-led events, and the creator community economy. I launched my first community in 2020 as a wellness community, but then failed at my paid launch. Then I became a consultant and have since helped over 60 business owners build, launch, and grow online communities! I have a podcast called the Community Strategy Podcast, with interviews from over 100 community builders. Season 2 of the Community Strategy Podcast features excerpts from the Creator to Community Builder Book, which will be published in the fall of 2023. In Creator to Community Builder, you’ll learn how Community Strategist Deb Schell has helped over 60 business owners find calm in building, launching, and growing their online communities. Based on client case studies, community examples, and interviews, this book provides new community builders with stories, strategies, worksheets, templates, and checklists that help you take action, launch sooner, and build your next revenue stream. Save thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of your valuable time by getting the strategies that have worked for successful community builders, and find calm building your online community today! As a member of an online community, I learned that I can transform my life by bringing people into it that help me change my mindset, skillset, and abilities to reach new levels in career, health, and lifestyle. The group was called Location Indie, and it catered to professionals like me who are passionate about travel and working remotely. I joined quickly after finding them. It only took speaking with a few members to know I’d found “my people.” I felt like they understood me and the life I dreamed of. I yearned to travel while pitching stories, taking photographs, and writing. Ultimately, my experience with this community would inspire a completely different career path.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

The Community Strategy Podcast interviews business leaders, community builders, and entrepreneurs who are working to find different ways to monetize their business. The podcasts I'm sharing are also focused on helping you learn as a community builder, manager, or host, how to build inclusion, belonging, and create an engaged space where people want to spend their time online. (and maybe in person!)

What is my podcast playlist about?

Online Communities have been around for a long time, and Meetup is the most common example I can think of about a company that focused on community building and made it a business, but they've struggled financially because our world struggles to see community facilitation, moderation, and management as a business service. The podcasts I'm sharing and the one I host is focused on helping bring to light the idea that an online community can be a bridge between people who struggle to change and those who want to implement change in our life. The people are a bit ahead of us can help those along the way. That's the benefits of a community ecosystem, based on shared wisdom. In order for this all to be possible, someone must be in charge of leadership, development, programming, management, and organization, this requires time and therefore should be compensated since this is time spent to help others enrich their life. However, most people assume that this isn't something that they should "Pay" for that it should be "free" like a lot of things - the problem is that we don't live in a world where people value things on the same level. The future is full of challenges, complex ideas, and difficult conversations, but community builders are the bridge builders between these concepts and help guide our understanding, help us be more human, and develop better communication and socialization skills, very much needed in this post-pandemic society.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. The Collective Mindset

Why this podcast?

This is a great podcast that talks about all things online community including leadership, management, diversity, inclusion, belonging, and the business of community as the industry struggles to find it's footing - or decide what it's next move is - The community industry leaders hosting this podcast bring amazing guests and questions each time their on the air, and they offer YouTube subscribers ways to get their questions answered live! The past recordings have been really informative and powerful. Just listening to past episodes has helped many community managers, and social media managers better understand the challenges that they all collectively face - together. I highly recommend listening to this if you work in the tech industry and want to become a community manager, or are currently in a role as a community manager, community engagement, or director of community.

3. 10% Happier with Dan Harris

Why this podcast?

This is one of my favorite podcasts because it helps me be a better human, which helps all of us be better in the communities we lead, as a community leader. I read Dan Harris's book when it came out (the first one) a few years ago, and since then I've been a big subscriber to the pod and the app - I meditate every day with the app. The best part about this pod is that it really goes through all the key aspects of community building, and discusses the challenges that humans face - and as individuals face - and as business owners face. It's just a really great pod.

4. We Can Do Hard Things

Why this podcast?

When I started listening to this in the beginning of 2023, I wasn't sure about this one - but wow - is it a fantastic podcast! The topics that these women discuss are things that women should be talking about in every home, everywhere! The fact that a podcast exists means that a community would benefit from conversations just like this one because if these women are having a conversation that hasn't happened in most of the households currently, then we need to - as community leaders - open up a safe place to offer to host these conversations - this is my mission at some point in my life - to have a safe place to talk about eating disorders. As someone who's struggled with eating disorders all my life, and who wants to belong, and has been traumatized by religion, culture, and relationships, this is a great topic for a community concept, which I hope to host at one point in my lifetime.

Life is freaking hard. We are all doing hard things every single day – things like loving and losing; caring for children and parents; forging and ending friendships; battling addiction, illness, and loneliness; struggling in our jobs, our marriages, and our divorces; setting boundaries; and fighting for equality, purpose, freedom, joy, and peace. On We Can Do Hard Things, Glennon Doyle, author of UNTAMED; her wife Abby Wambach; and her sister Amanda Doyle do the only thing they’ve found that has ever made life easier: Drop the fake and talk honestly about the hard things including sex, gender, parenting, blended families, bodies, anxiety, addiction, justice, boundaries, fun, quitting, overwhelm . . . all of it. We laugh and cry and help each other carry the hard so we can all live a little bit lighter and braver, free-er, less alone.

5. The Pirate Life Podcast

Why this podcast?

This pod is hosted by three of my friends in Central Pennsylvania and whom I admire and love to listen and laugh to while I drive, it represents what it means to be a community - these three women support each other - without judgement, and encourage each other to try harder in life, work, and relationships. Over the past few years I've told Adrianne that I've loved the pod so much that I want to be an unofficial "pirate" and I was invited to a beach trip 2 years ago! So much fun! the best part about this pod is that it's just a fun friendly conversation with gal pals who inspire us to laugh, love life, and try something new - maybe wear a pirate hat too... someday!
