Podcaster Q&A
Tell us about yourself – what is your background?
I'm Brian Colburn, podcaster, producer, and the voice behind Feed Drops, the podcast about podcasts. My journey into this audio-obsessed world didn’t start in a studio; it started with a love of storytelling and a relentless curiosity for what makes something worth listening to. I’ve spent years not just creating podcasts but helping others sharpen theirs, whether they’re indie upstarts or experienced voices fine-tuning their craft.
Why did you get into podcasting?
Because I couldn’t not. Podcasting grabbed me from the start, not just as a medium, but as a movement. I’ve always believed in the power of story and sound. There’s something uniquely human about hearing someone’s voice in your ear, it bypasses pretense and dives straight into authenticity. That intimacy? It’s magic. What started as casual listening quickly turned into an obsession. I found myself asking not just what made a podcast entertaining, but why.
How did the idea for the show come about?
Lynz originated the concept for seasons 1 & 2. As they say, Life Happens. Season 3 has a different format and I'm hosting the show Solo Style. I listen obsessively, across all genres, from polished NPR storytelling to indie passion projects recorded in basements. But as a podcaster and producer, I started noticing a huge gap: there wasn’t a space where podcasts themselves were being reviewed with real insight. Not just “here’s what’s trending,” but “here’s what works, what doesn’t, and why.”
What do you hope listeners take from the show?
I hope listeners walk away from Feed Drops feeling energized, informed, and inspired, whether they’re creators or just passionate fans of the medium. For podcasters, I want the show to be a mirror and a mentor. A place where they get honest, constructive feedback that helps them grow, without feeling like they’re being judged. We highlight what’s working, point out where there’s room to level up, and remind creators that every show has the potential to connect deeply when crafted with care.
What's been the biggest challenge for you?
Feed Drops is built on deep listening, thoughtful analysis, and a genuine desire to help creators improve. But doing that right means going beyond surface-level takes. It means committing time to full episodes, digging into structure, editing choices, storytelling flow, and understanding what the podcaster meant to do and what landed.
How can your listeners support your show?
If you love what Feed Drops is all about, spotlighting great podcasts, giving creators real feedback, and helping you discover your next audio obsession, there are a few powerful ways you can support us: First, listen, share, and subscribe. Second, join the Feed Drops + Community. This is where the real behind-the-scenes happens: creator Q&As, feedback workshops, and a tight-knit circle of podcasters and fans who truly care about the craft.
Any future plans that you'd like to share?
Deepening the Feed Drops + Community, bringing in workshops, live feedback sessions, and private AMA events with top podcasters and audio pros. Whether you’re just launching or five seasons in, this will be the place to grow and connect.
Anything else you'd like to share?
If you’re not a podcaster yet… hit record. Don’t wait for perfect. Don’t overthink the gear or the format. Your voice, your story, your perspective someone out there needs it. And if you are a podcaster? Don’t settle. Don’t coast. Make an improvement plan. Listen to your show with fresh ears. Get feedback. Try something new. Tighten your intros. Sharpen your edits.
