Who am I?

Hello! A little about me... I am a multi-award-winning filmmaker, writer, director, producer, actor, podcast producer, host, and Caregiver Advocate. I started my career in network television for Tweens (CAKE and Dance Revolution) as well as features ( “Bratz the Movie” for Lionsgate, and “Soul Surfer” for Sony). I am incredibly proud of writing, directing, and producing the 2018 Oscar Qualified short film, My Mom and The Girl starring Valerie Harper in her final performance which was based on my mother who lived with Alzheimer's for 16 years. I also have two podcasts that I love doing! I produce and co-host Love Conquers Alz – awarded BEST PODCAST 2020 by New Media Film Festival and is also #3 on Feedspots’ 2023 25 Best Alzheimer’s Podcasts list. I am also the co-creator, co-writer, co-star, and director of the outrageous horror/comedy narrative podcast I Love Lucifer which was just nominated Best Audio Fiction by Indie Series Awards this year. Currently, I am producing a critical documentary, No Country For Old People, which centers on the Nursing Home Neglect and the systemic healthcare crisis responsible for it. I appearin several Alzheimer’s awareness campaigns for Alzheimer’s Los Angeles and I proudly emceed the 2022 San Fernando Valley Alzheimer's Walk holding up a purple flower for my mother who passed away in July. It wasn’t long after my mother was officially diagnosed with Alzheimer's that my only sibling, most of our family, and all of mom’s friends drifted away. It’s not unusual for one person in a family to become the sole caregiver for their loved one.  That person was me. It wasn’t easy, but I don’t regret a single moment. The journey eventually became the inspiration for my 2018 Oscar Qualified, award-winning short film MY MOM AND THE GIRL. The filmwas celebrated as a "joyous look at Alzheimer's" by reviewers and starred Valerie Harper in her final flawless performance portraying my mother. What motivated me to make this film was my desire to share a story that presented an accurate, unbiased depiction of a very misunderstood disease. A story that had the potential to change conversations about Alzheimer's and dementia by replacing stigma, denial, fear, and grief with acceptance, understanding, appreciation, and love. I'm proud to say that this small film fulfilled my goals… and then some. The many interviews, magazine articles, accolades, and letters of gratitude I regularly receive confirm my belief in the superpower of stories to impart information through emotional connection that leads to a deeper - more memorable - understanding. After traveling the film festival circuit where I “hugged and cried with more strangers in one year” than in my whole life, I was motivated to continue the conversation that had been started. I wanted to help more people reframe how they look at Alzheimer’s and Dementia... and so, I launched the podcast, LOVE CONQUERS ALZ. We are in our 6th season and I still look forward to hosting every new episode show!

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Now in its 6th season, Love Conquers Alz - Voted Best Podcast in 2020 by the New Media Film Festival - is a bi-monthly podcast that features some of the most renown experts, enlightening authors, and inspirational stories from diverse caregivers of all ages. If you have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia or love someone who has, my co-host, Don Priess, and I want you to know you are definitely not alone. We want to help you to find the joy in the journey. We want you to remember that Love is powerful. Love is contagious. And Love Conquers Alz.

What is my podcast playlist about?

This list is for anyone who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia, loves someone who has, and those who are either new or experienced caregivers. The caregiving community is extremely supportive and many of us with podcasts are fans of each others' approaches. And there are many as you will see below. I'm sure you'll find one of my picks to be a perfect fit for you!

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Love Conquers Alz

Why this podcast?

Alzheimer's sucks. It's an equal opportunity disease that chips away at everything we hold dear. And to date, there's no cure. So until there is, my co-host, Don Priess, and I - both having loved and cared for some with Alzheimer's - continue to fight with the most powerful tool in our arsenal. Love. Love Conquers Alz is a real and really positive podcast that takes a deep dive into everything Alzheimer's. I want to share this recent review which I love and think it describes our vibe and passion so well: "Don and Susie have the trifecta going on. They do a great job of shining a light on Alzheimer’s and aging with dignity! They are passionate as well as knowledgable and so much fun to listen to!" I hope you enjoy!!

2. Well I Know Now with Pippa Kelly

Why this podcast?

Well Now I Know is hosted by Pippa Kelly, a blogger, author, and podcaster from Britain. I was interviewed by Pippa and I have to say it was one of the best interviews I have ever had. Pippa is a top notch journalist. Every one of her guests have stories to tell that will either resonate with listeners or inform them, reassuring those who have recently been diagnosed with dementia – and, importantly, their loved ones – that they are not alone, that there is life, albeit a different life, after diagnosis.
