Podcaster Q&A

Tell us about yourself – what is your background?

I have a PhD in linguistics from UBC and I grew up in beautiful British Columbia. Moved to Arizona for over a decade, and now I'm back home, in Vancouver.

Why did you get into podcasting?

I left academia and missed having an outlet to explain why shitty on other people's language was Not Cool. Podcasting seemed like a relatively easy way to get my message across.

How did the idea for the show come about?

At the time, the media kept talking about how harmful vocal fry was to women and their voices. I knew that we were judging women for talking AS WOMEN and I needed to explain why we were only pretending to judge the vocal fry, but really we were being misogynistic.

What do you hope listeners take from the show?

Stop judging language and just accept difference. Learn to love your own accent and be curious about how others speak.

What's been the biggest challenge for you?

Juggling editing, social media, email, recording, finding guests... I had to switch to a monthly release schedule.

How can your listeners support your show?

Best way is through patreon: patreon.com/vocalfriespod.

Any future plans that you'd like to share?

We're still writing our book! But it's coming together finally. Look for an announcement soonish.

Anything else you'd like to share?

I love knitting, crocheting, cats and rollerskating.
