Podcaster Q&A
Tell us about yourself – what is your background?
We’re both graphic designers and good friends who love great stories and the intersection of design and pop culture. During our careers, we have collected a caboodle of adventures from unique luminaries we’ve known and worked with, award shows we’ve judged, lectures and workshops conducted and industry recognition received.
Why did you get into podcasting?
It began during Covid. We found ourselves with quieter schedules and more limited means for creative expression. We help tell stories for a living and were excited by the idea of doing it in a medium new to both of us. It’s been an interesting learning process.
How did the idea for the show come about?
We were having a conversation about an iconic illustrator named Mort Drucker passing away and the impact his work for MAD Magazine had on both of us. About halfway through the call, Elliot mentioned it would be great if we could record the conversation to share with other people. And here we are.
What do you hope listeners take from the show?
Our goal is to tell the stories behind pop culture touchstones in interesting ways and celebrate the people who brought them to life. Things like ad mascots or product parodies don’t appear out of thin air. Very often work seen as juvenile actually has sophisticated thinking behind it (which is why you remember it).
What's been the biggest challenge for you?
Like most podcasts, it’s audience growth and what comes next (sponsorships, an additional touchpoint for listeners) once we reach certain levels. We’re also always trying to refine the structure to make the episodes as compelling as possible.
How can your listeners support your show?
There are several ways: 1. Send us an email to say hello! 2. Tell a friend or two about us. 3. Follow us on social media. 4. Leave a review wherever you listen. 5. Support us on Patreon. 6. Buy our merch.
Any future plans that you'd like to share?
We have some exciting seasons coming up with themes listeners are going to enjoy. We also have a long list of topics in the pipeline. When we reach a certain number of episodes and blog posts, we’re going to try to figure out what else we can do with all our content. More to come.
Anything else you'd like to share?
Podcasting can often be a one way medium. Let us know you’re out there listening with an email, review or social media comment. Even a future episode idea. We’re open to any and all dialogue. We’re also open to you buying us a round in the bar.
