Podcaster Q&A

Tell us about yourself – what is your background?

I have a background in music radio, and in the 90s transitioned into speech based radio. I come from a working class background, didn't do too well at school, and have no formal training in radio or podcasting. I'm interested in how we get more people from lower socio economic backgrounds into podcasting.

Why did you get into podcasting?

I started out in music and radio in the 90's. Podcasting is just another way to deliver the kind of shows I've always made.

How did the idea for the show come about?

I'm part of the campaign group Class Divide that's trying to make education fairer in the city of Brighton and Hove. I thought a podcast series would help with the campaign.

What do you hope listeners take from the show?

That education should be accessible to everyone, and the chances you have in life shouldn't be impacted by the postcode you are born in to.

What's been the biggest challenge for you?

I've spent nearly 3 years working on the Class Divide series, a lot of the time alone. It took over my life, and that has been challenging for me and my family.

How can your listeners support your show?

Listen with an open heart, because some of the stories are challenging and uncomfortable to listen to. Share with people who might need some gentle support in understanding their privilege and advantages and how they might negatively impact others if not recognised.

Any future plans that you'd like to share?

We are developing a bunch of live events around the podcast topics in 2024. But my girlfriend makes a funny face if ever talk of series 2 comes up.

Anything else you'd like to share?

Class Divide wasn't a one man show. I had massive support from one of the main guests Carlie. My exec producer was Eve Streeter. My twin brother did most of the post production. We had great support from a bunch of record labels that let us use their music including Fatcat (Sigur Ros's label).
