Podcaster Q&A
Tell us about yourself – what is your background?
I am an award-winning journalist and CEO of Ernest Media Empire, LLC. I'm also the Editor of Eater Philly, Political Writer at Large for Philadelphia Magazine, President of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists, and Regional Vice President of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (Mid-Atlantic Chapter). I'm the proud executive producer and host of the hit podcast “Ernestly Speaking!” and host of Philadelphia City Council Live on WURD Radio.
Why did you get into podcasting?
It was an opportunity to express myself unapologetically and candidly on the hot topics of the week.
How did the idea for the show come about?
After a decade of being a print and digital journalist, my followers were interested in me hitting the mic and speaking on the pressing topics that mattered to me the most.
What do you hope listeners take from the show?
That there's nuance, diversity, and analysis worthy to consider for every hot-button news topic.
What's been the biggest challenge for you?
Choosing which topic gets my focus for the week. There's so many interesting things that happen in the world, but so little time. Being the executive producer and host of this show means I have to curate what I personally believe is priority.
How can your listeners support your show?
By first listening, but then spreading the word to others -- and leaving a great review doesn't hurt either.
Any future plans that you'd like to share?
Anything is possible -- guests can look forward to surprise interviews, special edition episodes, and more great coverage on the issues shaping our society.
Anything else you'd like to share?
I can be followed on Twitter and other social media platforms at @MrErnestOwens & ernestowens.com. I can also be booked for virtual and in-person speaking inquiries: Contact my agent Sean Lawton of Collective Speakers at 720-778-2776 and/or [email protected]. I'm also the author of the book “The Case for Cancel Culture” that’s published by St. Martin’s Press, an imprint of Macmillan Publishers -- and you can grab a copy wherever books are sold.
