Podcaster Q&A
Tell us about yourself – what is your background?
We are Rick and Kate - husband and wife living in Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK. Since we first met in 1998, music has always played a big part in our bond and story. We had a few of the same albums, generally like the same kind of music (with a few exceptions) and still enjoy going to live gigs. We were both born in 1972 and have two teenage kids. Rick still feels quite strongly about the 'album' as an art-form among the changing musical landscape where streams are now the thermometer of success.
Why did you get into podcasting?
Rick's idea! He's a big podcast fan - true crime, health, music, self-improvement - and suggested we give it a go during COVID times when things were still restricted and we were unable to go out as much. We do everything ourselves - research, planning, recording, editing, publishing, social media and publicity, and so it's a true indie podcast and a lot of effort, but we love the fact we can tell people we have a podcast and spark a conversation that way.
How did the idea for the show come about?
Rick had listened to a few music discussion podcasts, including some album focused ones, but thought we could put our own spin on it by revisiting life in the UK around the time of release and talking about what we were up to and what was happening in the charts, at the movies etc.
What do you hope listeners take from the show?
We just hope they enjoy it. We're not trying to change the world. It's hopefully entertaining and the listeners will learn a few things about the records we talk about and the events that surrounded the release dates. Whereas Rick is a bit nerdy for facts and stories about the albums and bands, Kate keeps things a bit more lighthearted and will take the p**s out of Rick at every available opportunity. She's also very opinionated - we've been told we have great banter, so we'll take that!
What's been the biggest challenge for you?
Growing the audience. As we have busy lives outside of our podcasting, our episode releases are very sporadic which we realise isn't ideal, but it's the reality and not ideal for listeners, but hopefully the wait between episodes is always worth it!
How can your listeners support your show?
By interacting with us, providing feedback, opinions, comments and insights of their own. We'll always take the time to reply as we appreciate the fact that people have taken time out of their busy lives to contact us. Social media engagement, shares, and ratings, are all good ways of supporting the show. Thanks very much if that's YOU!
Any future plans that you'd like to share?
We hope to get a few more guests on the show. We've had a couple on to talk about their own records and they were amazing. Check out the 'Hangover Square' and 'Country & Northern' episodes.
Anything else you'd like to share?
There's some amazing music coming up that we're really excited to be talking about, and in our current series (2) the vast majority of these are from the 90's which is surely the best music decade ever right?!
