Podcaster Q&A
Tell us about yourself – what is your background?
I'm a long-time social media and digital marketing strategist, author and speaker with a particular focus on influence and influence marketing. I'm a public relations practitioner by trade which means I've been doing "influence" marketing my whole career. But my early professional life was in radio and radio production, so I love podcasting. So much so that in my rare spare time, I co-host a music show focused on Americana and roots music called Roots Music Rambler.
Why did you get into podcasting?
My first job at 14 years old was a radio disc jockey. By the time podcasting came about in the early 2000s, I had migrated out of a 10-15 year career in radio that took me all the way to associate producer at ABC Radio Sports in the mid-1990s. I experimented with creating one in the early 2010s just to ensure I understood the technology. When live streaming became available, I began informally live streaming weekly and eventually flipped that to a podcast.
How did the idea for the show come about?
Winfluence was launched as a support mechanism for my book of the same name. Eventually, it became the focus of my influencer marketing efforts. Roots Music Rambler is my hobby/fun podcast to explore and celebrate music I love.
What do you hope listeners take from the show?
On Winfluence, we look beyond the superficiality of some influencers and influencer marketing efforts and try to find the core principles that make true influence happen. My hope is that listeners learn how to be better as influence marketers as a result. For Roots Music Rambler, we want people to better connect the roots of music that come from the artist's place, time, environment and more.
What's been the biggest challenge for you?
I'm an audiophile so adding video is not something I really cared to do. However, it seems necessary to expose your podcasts these days. So I begrudgingly do it.
How can your listeners support your show?
Support the advertisers you hear. I would be ticked with tips, but I don't do it for the money. I hope people learn and get something valuable out of it.
Any future plans that you'd like to share?
Just that Winfluence is a part of the Marketing Podcast Network, which I run. So there's a lot more great shows to partake of. Keep listening!
