John Emotions talks about “authenticity” when it comes to content creators. He covers Performative Authenticity like scripts, editing, staging, and calls to action; Curated Authenticity like holding back most of the bad stuff and keeping the content neutral or good; and Oversharing/TMI which is often seen as weak, negative, or attention-seeking. John wonders aloud if the Observer Effect makes true authenticity impossible in the age of webcams and hot takes. John Emotions overshares his long-running challenges with ADHD. Once diagnosed in grade school, John's parents let the ADHD go untreated until John became too much to handle, and they both banned him from their respective homes by age 14.
Later, after years of relative success masking as normal, John's marriage ended, leaving him in an emergency psych ward where they "diagnosed" him with bipolar disorder after about 20 minutes.
This misdiagnosis led to ten years of psych meds that did not work, because bipolar meds do not work on ADHD. Hyperactivity is not mania. People suffering from severe ADHD cannot sort these things out alone.
Brother G, suffers from ADHD and has a similar background to John with one exception; Brother G inherited money and doesn't have the pressure of working. This espiode covers some of the important differences money and supportive relatives have on the outcome of a kid with untreated ADHD after they become an adult with ADHD.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

To try and get more people to talk about their mental health as comfortably as they talk about their physical health.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

That's its beneficial to acknowledge your feelings, moods, and emotions — but its everyone's personal responsibility to manage their own.

Which episode should someone start with?

The most recent episodes will reflect my newfound interest in trying to make money podcasting. They will be more traditional episodes. Many of the older episodes bounce from one subject to the next, and experiment with myriad formats, cohosts, and guests. This is likely due to severe, untreated adult ADHD.

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

Episodes where I get to interview a listener one-on-one.

Which episode are you most proud of?

The episodes that made a difference to the guests.

What is your vision for your show?

I would like to make the show more consistent, develop some recurring bits, and ultimately pitch it to a media company so I can pay the rent.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

I'm a huge fan of Marc Maron's WTF because I like his mellow, but deep interview style.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

It's a workout studio for your emotions ... dojo means studio, and emo is short for emotions. So, Emo Dojo!

Tell us a bit about yourself

I have a background in music, marketing, and broadcast media production. I've been podcasting as a hobby for many years, and finally decided 2023 was going to be the year I try to fix my ADHD and make some money with a podcast. I'm also a Gen-X dad to three dudes, and into a bunch Gen Z internet culture (gaming, toys, youtube) because of that.
