When the high tide reaches Venice, four sirens are sounded to warn the population of the incoming danger. Each one of them represents a growing level of emergency, the level of the rising water. Yet there was no sound after the last siren, nothing to prepare venetians for the level of destruction the 2019 storm brought to town. This is how The Fifth Siren was born. Venice becomes the nexus where many global crises come together - environmental, cultural, social, technological. We aim to alert and explore what is beyond it: the many challenges we have to confront when facing an unknown future. The podcast has been produced by Fill Productions with the support of the Italian Cultural Institute in London and Banor Capital.

He was one of the longest-serving prime ministers of one of the world’s wealthiest countries, until he was brought down by three powerful women - and two words: “Bunga Bunga.” From Wondery, the makers of Dirty John and The Shrink Next Door, and hosted by comedian Whitney Cummings, “Bunga Bunga” is an eight part series on the incredible true story of the rise and fall of Silvio Berlusconi, told with Whitney’s signature wit and style.

The Roman World introduces students to the society, literature and art of ancient Rome, through a study of its major historical and literary figures, such as Julius Caesar, Augustus, Nero, Virgil and Ovid. We shall look at Rome’s place in the ancient Mediterranean world, and its connections with ancient Greece and other cultures, such as Egypt and Gaul. Through almost constant warfare, Rome accumulated an enormous Mediterranean empire, and this subject will investigate how this shaped Roman culture, through such topics as the acquisition of slaves and the ability to import luxury objects. We shall also see how the civil conflicts of the first century BCE affected Rome and Roman identity, leading to Caesar, Pompey and others engaging in propaganda wars, as seen through competitive monumental building, and to some self-questioning in the literature of the period. Towards the end of the semester, we shall look at Rome’s lasting influence, and the way that we continue to represent Rome in book and film.

You may be wondering why I’m hosting a podcast about Lucca. Well, after travelling the length and breadth of Italy, I have quite simply, fallen in love with Lucca. I now spend a few months here each year, and, much to my delight, I have been welcomed into the community that is Lucca as only the Lucchese people know how to do.

About the Podcast

During my podcast I will be joined by a variety of special guests from all walks of life, who share my passion for Lucca and everything Italian. Each episode, my guests will share unique stories and interesting experiences that have shaped their lives and indulged their passion for Lucca. Throughout the podcast, guests will be sharing how they discovered Lucca, along with interesting tips for those that live, visit, intend to visit, or are just curious about Lucca. About Lucca

The Tuscan City of Lucca (Centro Storico), has a population of around 88k, and is encircled by medieval walls which are used as a social promenade. Interesting landmarks include; the Guinigi Tower, the Anfiteatro, and the Via Fillungo, which is the main shopping street. There are many beautiful Churches, including the Duomo of San Martino, San Michele, and San Frediano with its stunning mosaic. The Province of Lucca, consisting of just over 30 Communi (districts), has a population of around 380k, and this podcast will discuss the breathtaking delights of the City and the Communi beyond its Walls.

As a traveler, I always felt that there was something missing when I would go on walking tours to see special sites and monuments. I wanted fire works!Remember in your life when you had that exceptional teacher, that you never forgot, because they made it fun to learn? That’s what I wanted and I went out in search of those people to built my company on that very premise! Now, we have been taking people around all parts of Italy for over 20 years. We started in Rome (where I am a licensed guide) and have expanded to Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, Florence, and Venice. Something that makes Through Eternity Tours special is that the staff and guides, who work with us, are exceptional. We have built very strong bonds together and we are all a great support network for each other. That is why we have created TE Talks to keep the stories going to keep your dreams of Italy alive.

Letters to Italy by Sara Marinelli is an eighth-part series about the impact of Covid-19 on Italian immigrants in the Bay Area. How did Italian expats feel when they received news of their country being the epicenter of the pandemic in the Western world, and how did it affect their distant relationship to home? At the intersection of personal memoir and documentary, each episode features conversations with an Italian expat to hear how the pandemic reshaped their life in the U.S., and how they tried to remain connected to Italy in a time of crisis and forced separation. Conversations bring up questions of belonging, resilience, community, and how to transform challenges into possibilities.
