The Democracy Works podcast seeks to answer that question by examining a different aspect of democratic life each week — from voting to criminal justice to the free press and everything in between. We interview experts who study democracy, as well as people who are out there doing the hard work of democracy day in and day out. The show’s name comes from Pennsylvania’s long tradition of iron and steel works — people coming together to build things greater than the sum of their parts. We believe that democracy is the same way. Each of us has a role to play in building and sustaining a healthy democracy and our show is all about helping people understand what that means. Democracy Works is part of The Democracy Group, a network of podcasts that examines what’s broken in our democracy and how we can work together to fix it.

From decisions at the dinner table to declarations from the Rose Garden; moments build upon one another informing our past, illuminating our present, inventing our future. History makes meaning, especially when it comes to the state of our democracy, and context is everything. The Context is a new podcast about the history, trends, and ideas shaping democracy in the United States and around the world. In each episode, host Alex Lovit will interview someone who has seen it all—scholars, politicians, journalists and public servants—to get their take on how we got to where we are and what they’ve seen through their experience not only watching the news unfold but sometimes even being the news itself. Reckoning with racism, a crisis of democracy, the right role of government in our daily lives—every question has its reason; every answer has its context. Tune in every other week wherever you listen to podcasts. Subscribe to The Context to get the latest episodes. The Charles F. Kettering Foundation works to inspire and connect individuals and organizations to advance thriving and inclusive democracies around the globe. Democracy and rule of law are under threat in a way we haven’t seen in decades or perhaps centuries, and anger, fear, and division run deep. But if we look around the world, we as Americans can learn from countries that faced their own bitter divisions and came out on the other side with their democracies intact and strengthened based on shared values. On How Do We Get Through This?, a podcast mini-series, we speak with leaders who were key to shaping their countries’ futures at times when everything was at stake. In our first episode, we speak with Roelf Meyer and Mohammed Bhabha, two leaders who helped bring an end to Apartheid and establish a multiracial democracy in South Africa. In episode two, we learn from Monica McWilliams and Mike Nesbitt—a Protestant and a Catholic who negotiated an end to decades of war in Northern Ireland. In our third episode, we host activists Roberto Patiño and Avila Kilmurray, who share hard-won insights on bridging divides and fighting for democracy in fractured countries. We hope the lessons they learned when all hope seemed lost, when continued violence seemed inevitable, will help Americans navigate this moment and apply these lessons as we work to keep our country whole and build a more inclusive democracy and nation.

A Participatory Economy (also known as Parecon) is a model for a new democratic, fair and green economic system based on democratic planning of the productive commons by self-managing workplaces and neighbourhoods. It describes how a modern economy of millions of people can be organised around solidarity and cooperation instead of competition and greed. In this podcast, co-creator and economist, Robin Hahnel, is joined by fellow advocates Mitchell Szczepanczyk and Antti Jauhiainen to discuss questions and topics relating to a Participatory Economy, post-capitalism and how we can get there.
