Who am I?

I'm an ER doctor and toxicologist with a passion for poisons. I love sharing the absolutely fascinating stories and fun facts I've discovered while caring for patients and researching toxins. I'm the creator and host of the Pick Your Poison Podcast. I love to hear great stories and learn fascinating facts, so I'm drawn to podcasts covering serious topics in an entertaining and easy to learn way. As an ER doctor and toxicologist I've spent a lot of time at patient's bedsides listening to their stories. I've also spent a lot of time doing research, interpreting research, and attempting to translate it into clinical medicine. I love to listen to people who take big ideas and help us think about them in an understandable way or from a new perspective.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Pick Your Poison is a fast-paced, interactive podcast about poisons, toxins, mayhem and murder spanning from ancient history to pop culture. I love sharing stories about toxins and fascinating facts about poisoning. I discuss everything from plants to pharmaceuticals, chemicals to common household products, drugs of abuse to chemical warfare and everything in between. Historical events, poison in pop culture, malicious, accidental…. Rather than read this list, listen to the podcast for all the details. I'm inspired by the way the podcasts on this list present interesting stories and information. The goal of Pick Your Poison is to share my love for medicine and toxicology in a similarly entertaining fashion.

What is my podcast playlist about?

I've picked shows for this list that share information in the way I love to learn about science and medicine. Intelligent, interesting and fun.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Bedside Rounds

Why this podcast?

This is the first podcast I really fell in love with. The topics range from medicine in ancient times to modern dilemmas. Adam Rodman brings history to life and always manages to link the past to the present. No matter how historical the topic, he always touches on modern issues like how doctors approach patients and think about things like diagnosis.

This Podcast Will Kill You - No Spoilers!

This science podcast is about epidemiology but don’t let the scientific term scare you. The show is all about make the history, biology, and all other aspects of diseases easy to understand. There is a major focus on infectous dieases although noncommunicable ones are included occasionally. A product of the Exactly Right network (home to My Favorite Murder and Tenfold More Wicked) is hosted by disease ecologists and epidemiologists Erin Welsh and Erin Allmann Updyke. Every episode the show starts with an account of a survivor which gives light to the all too often neglected human and social impacts. Then the two spilt the research they’ve done on the world’s smallest serial killers and present it to each other and the listeners. It makes for a complete rundown of diseases we’ll most likely never expierence thanks to public health initiatives. You’ll also learn a themed drink recipe for each episode. Apple podcasts has 4.8 stars, and a little under 15,000 ratings. There’s plenty of content with 134 episodes so far and new ones coming out every Thursday.. or Friday. On average the episodes are about an hour long although some episodes can go much longer. While the longer ones are hard to get through, the two are trying to be as thorough as possible. The most popular episodes according to Owltail are Ep 12 HIV/AIDS: Apathy Will Kill You and Ep 50 Antibiotics: We owe it all to chemistry!. The most interesting to me so far have been Ep 65 Sweating Sickness: Ready, Sweat, Go! and Ep 39 Toxoplasmosis: Calling All Cats. One of my favorite things a show can have is a book recommendation list of their sources on Bookshop.org and this one has one. Overall a really great podcast to add to your subscriptions although beware listening too much may cause anxiety for some.

Similar pods: In Defense of Plants Podcast, Sawbones: A Marital Tour of Misguided Medicine, and American Hysteria.

Why this podcast?

I love this podcast because of Tim Harford's amazing insights. He approaches problems in a logical way, exploring perspectives others might not have considered. I love how he shares his reasoning and shows us how we can all learn from an incident, even it's remote from our own lives.
