The best podcasts for German speaking folks

Who am I?

I recently rediscovered my passion for podcasting and infected my two brothers as well. Also I am a multi instrumentalist musician, singer and growler, rock/metal music nerd, whisky afficionado, giant poodle fanatic and self-proclaimed expert for all facts that can be considered useless. I can usually be found on one end of a dog leash (the one that does not hook into a collar), listening to podcasts or thinking about the big unanswered questions in life; sometimes even simultaniously. I want to promote German podcasts (including my own), as they don't seem to be very prevalent here, yet. I am a native German speaker and I started listening to German podcasts when the subculture of German podcasters was quite young.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

My own podcast "A Tribute To..." is about my two brothers and me writing a song a month each. To complicate things we challenge ourselves with imitating a famous band or musician every month which is chosen via poll by our listeners. The podcast is in German, so it definitely is a German podcast.

What is my podcast playlist about?

The podcasts I want to share have relatively little in common apart from being in German, but each one represents an important part pf Germany's podcast culture. I have to admit, this list is far from complete, omitting several types of podcasts entirely, but I decided to start with podcasts I cherish the most. If you know German, give them a listen. Btw, although several of the podcasters I mention by now make a living from their podcasts, I consider each of them as independent since none of them belong to any professional network or corporation. In Germany, many broadcasting networks and the bigger newspapers publish their own podcasts, sometimes several ones, but I like the independent ones better.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Lage der Nation - der Politik-Podcast aus Berlin

Why this podcast?

One of the most important podcasts in Germany. The hosts Philip Banse and Ulf Buermeyer show their listeners each week, what constructive journalism looks (and sounds) like. Explaining current topics in politics and society, they combine attention to detail and comprehensability while never sounding condescending.

2. Methodisch inkorrekt!

Why this podcast?

Two physicists, Dr. Nicolas Wöhrl and Dr. Reinhard Remfort talk about what's new in science by presenting each other (mostly) current papers from the scientific community. Biology, chemistry, psychology, engineering, linguistics and of course physics are just some examples of what those papers can be about, but you can always sense that you listen to two friends talking about what they are passionate about: Science!

3. Hotel Matze

An interview podcast about anything and everything. Host Matze Hielscher invites musicians, politicians, comedians, authors, journalists, podcasters, actors and anyone who can be considered interesting, to talk about who they are, what they do and what they like to talk about.

4. Geschichten aus der Geschichte

Why this podcast?

THE history podcast par excellence. Two trained historians, Richard Hemmer and Dr. Daniel Meßner, telling each other stories from history. In over 400 weeks they never failed to publish an episode! Their stories can be about everything that has happened at some point in history: incredible incidents, interesting (and most of the time undeservedly fameless) figures and any footnote of human history can serve as a topic all while trying to abandon pure eurocentristic views. Non-native speakers of German be warned: since one of the hosts is Austrian, some words and expressions are being used that you might not have encountered while learning German.

5. Alliteration Am Arsch

Why this podcast?

Originally I would have loved to include the famous "Not Safe For Work" podcast as the original blabbering podcast in German, but it has been discontinued, so I decided on a more recent example. Comedian Bastian Bielendorfer and physicist Reinhard Remfort (yup, he made this list twice), friends of the closest kind: those kind of friends who insult each other on a regular basis and who even show up to the other one's wedding without any gift. Sometimes funny, sometimes annoying, sometimes boring, sometimes informative, you never know which one it's gonna be this week.
