The best podcasts for curious, thoughtful, soulful humans who enjoy a little blues music

Who am I?

I'm a writer, muser, and musician who thinks in scenes and soliloquies. My entire life, I've had these flashes of insight that come to me as pointed statements laden with emotion, like lines from a movie, that bloom into minor monologues. In 2021, it hit me that these little vignettes, if developed and performed and edited together, would make a fine and rather unique little podcast, especially if I spliced them together with some sweet and soulful blues. Thus, the Ramblings of a Revenant Alien was born. Beyond that, I'm a happily married father of 3. I'm a true believer in search of meaningful conversations about goodness and truth and beauty. My podcast is my invitation, and it's open to all comers. I have a very diverse podcast diet, but all the shows I enjoy feed my curiosity, my mind, and/or my soul. I love to learn, laugh, and look for the light, and these shows help me do that. Since I enjoy these podcasts so much, I wanted to share and promote them as best I could, and at the same time, offer the GoodPods community what I hope is a neat little corner to explore.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

The RRA is a place to find wit, wisdom, and blues. I share my thoughts on spirituality, beauty, film, and whatever else is on my mind. Topics range from faith to fatherhood, comedy to the creative process, storytelling to scripture, all interspersed with original blues music. I also put out guest-focused "Ramble Room" episodes where I interview thoughtful, interesting, and relatable people with wise words for us all. If you need inspiration, advice, a laugh, or just a kind voice telling you the truth, you've come to the right place.

What is my podcast playlist about?

Each RRA episode is a collection of thoughts centered around a theme, a journey through a few back trails of the mind and on out the other side. They're just my musings, presented in as compelling and entertaining a way as I can manage. Each Ramble Room episode is a more traditional podcast interview format, where I bring on interesting people whom I know and love and have learned from. My listeners get a taste of the goodness and wisdom each guest lives out as a way of life.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Nant Fawr Brews

Why this podcast?

Andy showcases what is arguably the best use of the podcast medium: taking the listener on an exploration of a unique and interesting world, carried along by the host's love and enthusiasm for the subject matter. Andy's knowledge of and love for beer and the brewing process, and his positive enthusiastic delivery, make every episode a delightful draught. Cheers and enjoy!

2. BibleProject

Why this podcast?

So many spiritual podcasts feel narrow and exclusive, but John and Tim at Bible Project manage to make their podcast exactly the opposite. They approach the Bible with openness, curiosity, knowledge, and keen insight. Listeners will get their well-informed take on why the Bible is written the way it is, what it is/was trying to do, and how it relates to Jesus and his view of the scriptures. If you've ever wondered "What's in the Bible, and is there anything to it?" there's no better podcast!

3. Uncommon Knowledge

Why this podcast?

Though from a decidedly conservative perspective, host Peter Robinson's ability to ask his erudite guests honest, thoughtful, and probing questions, with humility, makes this podcast a gem. If you enjoy listening to very educated people talk about thorny issues and historic trends, you should try this one out.

4. People Also Watched

Why this podcast?

While I enjoy the parent show of this pod (Cinema Craptaculus), I enjoy People Also Watched even more. Tara, Adam, and Dave are hysterical. They clearly love movies, both good and bad, and it's always a treat o listen to their discussion, whether they're skewering a cinema failure or lauding a work of genius. It's just the right blend of humor, heart, and hilarity.

Every month, studios release big-budget features and for every one of those, there are a ton of lesser-known movies you just might love.
Join Tara, Adam, & Dave, industry insiders clinging onto the lower rungs of the Hollywood ladder, as they compare a new release to an older, nearly forgotten movie.
If you love the big-name, big-budget movies and the little-known movies that you think everybody must see, then you’ll want to get to know what People Also Watched...!

5. Girl In Space

Why this podcast?

Sarah Rhea Werner has crafted a unique, compelling, and thoroughly human space epic with her sci-fi audio drama Girl in Space. She's a one-of-a-kind storyteller, and the show is unlike any space opera you've ever heard, in my humble opinion. I can't recommend this journey enough -- get caught up before Season 2 releases!

Nothing fancy here -- just the simple audio diary of a girl in space. Also, there’s this weird and potentially ominous light in the distance that seems to be growing steadily closer. Listen for science, guns, trust, anti-matter, truth, beauty, inner turmoil, and delicious cheeses. It’s all here. In space.
