The best podcasts for Critical Mental Health Discussions

Who am I?

Mad in America exists to ask critical questions about the state of psychiatry and psychology in the 21st Century. In our podcast, we examine mental health with a critical eye by speaking with psychologists, psychiatrists and people with lived experience. When you hear such conversations, you realise that much of what is believed to be settled in mental health is actually up for debate. Is mental health a matter of faulty biology or is there more to it? Are the treatments used in psychiatry helpful or harmful in the long term? Are psychiatric diagnoses reliable? With the help of our guests, we examine these questions and so much more. Please join us for these important conversations. Mad in America launched in 2012 with the aim of sharing personal stories of those who had experience in the mental health system. We also share blogs written by psychiatrists and psychologists who believe that the mental health system needs to change to become more compassionate.

We give some indication of the origins and aspirations of this podcast series in our introductory episode. There have always been what are sometimes deemed alternative approaches to understanding emotional distress, mental health issues, extraordinary experiences; and responding to them. Mad In Ireland embraces the post psychiatric new paradigm in mental health, in terms of giving voice to what is collectively embraced within this paradigm. Fields of Healing contributes to this overall expression by showcasing conversations with practitioners who are engaged in fields of healing that respond to life challenges, including those that relate to emotional distress and mental health issues. There is no expectation of contributors conforming to any one understanding of this new paradigm, indeed some may not even have a mental health language though fit the paradigm none the less.
