Who am I?

I'm a Professor Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University in New York City. My science fiction novels include The Silk Code (winner of the Locus Award for Best First Science Fiction Novel of 1999), The Consciousness Plague, The Pixel Eye, Borrowed Tides, The Plot to Save Socrates, Unburning Alexandria, and Chronica. My novelette “The Chronology Protection Case” was made into a short film and is on Amazon Prime Video. My alternate history story about The Beatles, "It's Real Life," was made into a radio play, and was a finalist for the Sidewise Award for Alternate History. My novelette, “Robinson Calculator,” was published in the Robots Through the Ages anthology in July 2023. My nonfiction books, including The Soft Edge, Digital McLuhan, and New New Media, have been translated into 15 languages. I've appeared on CBS, CNN, MSNBC, the History Channel, and NPR. My 1972 album, Twice Upon A Rhyme, was re-issued in Japan and Korea in 2008, and in the U. K. in 2010. My first new album since 1972, Welcome Up: Songs of Space and Time, was released by Old Bear Records and Light in the Attic Records in 2020. I'm a science fiction author, and an avid reader, and fan of science fiction. Time travel and alternate history are my favorite kinds of science fiction, as an author, reader, viewer, and listener. I became very interested in alternate history in the 1960s, for two reasons: (1) When JFK was assassinated, I began thinking about how the world would be different if he had survived. (2) I loved Philip K. Dick's book, The Man in the High Castle, published in the 1960s. My appreciation of this alternate history narrative was heightened when I watched the TV series of The Man in the High Castle in the past decade. As an author, I've been thrilled with the response my short story, "It's Real Life" (2022) -- an alternate history in which The Beatles never disbanded and John Lennon survived -- has received. "It's Real Life" was made into a radio play in 2023, released as an audiobook, and the story won the Mary Shelley Award for Outstanding Fiction, 2023, and was a finalist for the Sidewise Award, 2022. I'm currently expanding the short story into a novel.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

I've been very pleased to have at least half a dozen interviews and discussions on my Light On Light Through podcast about alternate histories. These include an in-depth interview with Rufus Sewell, who played the leading character John Smith in The Man in the High Castle TV series, and an in-depth interview with Jack Dann, who wrote The Fiction Writer's Guide to Alternate History.

What is my podcast playlist about?

My podcast playlist is about the best episodes of podcasts, and the best podcasts, devoted to alternate history.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. The Chuck ToddCast

Why this podcast?

For the past few years, The Chuck Toddcast, in the month of December, has batted around various alternate histories with various experts. My personal favorite, for obvious reasons, is the episode Chuck did with me on December 26, 2023, about The Beatles, Putin, the US Supreme court, and lots of other topics and scenarios. But I'd highly recommend all of Chuck's episodes on alternate history.

2. Light On Light Through

Why this podcast?

This is my podcast, which has been increasingly devoted to alternate histories. I'd especially recommend Episode 224 (December 21, 2021) and my lengthy interview of Rufus Sewell, who starred in The Man in the High Castle tv series; Episode 351 (April 9, 2023) in which "Captain Phil" plays my "It's Real Life" alternate history (about The Beatles) radio play in its entirety, followed by an in-depth discussion Phil has with me about the story; and Episode 359 (November 7, 2023) in which I interview author Jack Dann about his book "A Fiction Writer's Guide to Alternate History".

3. A Fork In Time: The Alternate History Podcast

Why this podcast?

An excellent, ongoing weekly podcast devoted to only alternate history. Some especially enjoyable/powerful episodes: Episode 0190 (January 12, 2024) what if Churchill had been killed crossing 5th Avenue in New York City in 1939 (living in NYC, I can attest that it's a dangerous street to cross); Episode 0186 (December 2023) what if FDR had been assassinated in 1933 (FDR assassinated was the trigger of The Man in the High Castle); Episode 0181 (September 2023) what if an alien spaceship really did land at Roswell and the public was aware of it? See what I mean? If you like alternate history, you can't go wrong with this podcast.

Explore the realm of alternate histories as we explore the "what ifs" that can flow from history's most pivotal moments. Each episode will focus on a specific moment in time--the fork--where history could have taken a different path. A Fork In Time encourages contributions and participation by our community of listeners who have become an integral and vital part of the show.
This feed is also the home of our companion show, The Room Where It Happened, featuring the team looking at significant historical events without the alternative prespective.

4. The Ripple Effect Podcast

Why this podcast?

An ongoing highly intelligent alternate history podcast which addresses a wide variety of topics. My current favorite is Episode 489 (November 2023) about the JFK assassination. Not so much an alternate history, but an in-depth account of how and why the Warren Commission failed to explore all sorts of possible and likely factors in the assassination. I thought the Who Killed JFK? podcast with Rob Reiner and Soledad O'Brien raised some very important evidence and provided some crucial evidence. This episode of The Ripple Effect and its interview with Jack Roth (author of Killing Kennedy, 2023) makes an excellent accompaniment to Who Killed JFK?

5. Back To The Past: The Alternate History Podcast

Why this podcast?

I really like the deep range of historical what-ifs in this podcast -- what if the Black Plague didn't happen, Constantinople didn't fall, etc. Unfortunately, the most recent episode is December 2022, but this and the earlier episodes are well worth your time.
