The best podcasts for Looking Beyond the Story

Who am I?

I'm a storyteller who believes in the power of narrative to help us discover deeper truths. As host of The Better podcast, I explore how unexpected moments can reveal pathways to authentic community, genuine purpose, and true rest. Whether I'm sharing stories from my hometown in Indiana, recounting drives through the Badlands, or examining historical moments of transformation, I'm always searching for those places where the extraordinary breaks through our ordinary reality. I'm fascinated by how people throughout history have accessed deeper realities to transform their worlds, and I love sharing these discoveries with others. When I'm not podcasting, I work with teenagers and their parents, which constantly reminds me how relationships and stories shape who we become. I love thinking deeply and listening to stories. Stories on their own are fun, but when they make you examine your assumptions and worldviews, when they cause you to see others as people, when they cause you to feel something... that is the good stuff. This collection features podcasts that master the art of weaving narrative and insight together. Some share personal journeys that unexpectedly illuminate universal truths. Others take historical moments we thought we understood and reveal deeper meanings. All of them go beyond simple entertainment to challenge how we see ourselves, each other, and the world around us. These are the shows that make you pull over in your driveway to finish listening, the ones that keep you thinking days later, the ones you can't help but share with friends. Whether through intimate conversations, carefully crafted narratives, or thoughtful analysis, each of these podcasts invites us into a deeper way of experiencing life.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. This American Life

Why this podcast?

In a world overflowing with hot takes and breaking news, This American Life masters the art of slowing down and really seeing people. Through carefully crafted storytelling, they reveal the extraordinary within the ordinary - finding profound meaning in everything from family dinner conversations to corporate offices. While other shows race to conclusions, TAL takes the time to sit with complexity, showing how every story has layers we might miss at first glance. They don't just tell stories; they show us how to listen better, think deeper, and recognize the humanity in unexpected places. Each episode reminds us that the most compelling narratives aren't about heroes or villains, but about people trying to make sense of their lives, just like us.

2. The Moth

Why this podcast?

In an age of polished narratives and carefully curated content, The Moth celebrates the raw, unvarnished power of true stories told live without notes. These aren't professional storytellers (usually) - they're people sharing moments that changed them, made them laugh, broke their hearts, or helped them understand something profound. What makes The Moth special isn't just the stories themselves, but how the live audience creates this intimate space where vulnerability becomes contagious. Each episode reminds us that our seemingly ordinary lives contain extraordinary moments worth sharing, and that sometimes the greatest stories are the ones that feel the most human.

4. Revisionist History

Why this podcast?

Revisionist History does something rare - it makes you question stories you thought you knew while somehow deepening your wonder rather than your cynicism. Malcolm Gladwell doesn't just overturn conventional wisdom; he shows how our misunderstandings often reveal deeper truths about human nature. Whether he's exploring why McDonald's changed their fries or how one forgotten football play challenges our ideas about innovation, he transforms seemingly simple questions into revelatory journeys. It's like having a brilliantly curious friend who keeps asking 'but what if we've been looking at this all wrong?' in ways that make you see the world differently.
