The best podcasts for 80s and 90s Music Lovers

Who am I?

I am a photographer, writer, and podcaster with two books under my belt: "80s Redux" and "Lived Through That: 90s Musicians Today." I'm a huge music fan and love to share my favorite artists with others. Sadly, I was born without an ounce of musical talent. After realizing I was never going to effortlessly play the guitar or sing in tune, I focused a lot of my energies on listening to music. I came of age in the 80s and the rise of MTV brought loads of fantastic music to explore: punk, new-wave, post-punk, pop. My love for music grew and expanded as I grew up in the 90s. It was those I reached back to musical memories in creating my books, "80s Redux" and "Lived Through That." I also host a popular podcast called Lived Through That that combines my love of music and storytelling.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

My podcast is called Lived Through That and each episode features an artist I love from the 80s, 90s, and beyond talking about a pivotal moment i their lives. It's not always a musical-related moment - it runs the gamut from the everyday to the forming (or break-up) of their band to everything in between.

What is my podcast playlist about?

I am a huge fan of podcasts and wanted to highlight a few of my favorite shows that feature music, musicians, or are just music-adjacent.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. About A Girl

Why this podcast?

I love this podcast - the storytelling is fantastic and it often sheds a light on someone I know a tiny bit about but never the whole story. It's a page-turner of a podcast where you can't wait to hear what comes next. A lot of podcasts in the music genre are interview-style one on ones - this one is more narrative in approach and fills in their stories with context and new perspectives.

About A Girl is a scripted narrative anthology series about women whose stories have long been eclipsed by the legends of their famous partners. Bowie, Elvis, 2Pac, Prince, Miles, Biggie. Each of these icons created some of the most celebrated and enduring music of the modern age. But there's more to their stories than you know. About A Girl brings focus to the many women without whom the landscape of popular music might be very different.

2. The Hustle

Why this podcast?

This is an interview-style deep dive, kind of like Marc Maron's WTF but only with musicians. The guests he chooses are right up my alley and I love hearing these artists talk - the interviewer sometimes comes on a little strong, but he always dials it back and really lets the artist speak.

3. Fresh off the Spaceship

Why this podcast?

I loved this podcast. Coming from Seattle, I often think it's a shame folks outside our bubble only see us as the "grunge city." This city is exploding with talent and this podcast shines a light on a scene that everyone might not be aware exists. Five stars for sure.

4. Curious Creatures

Why this podcast?

Hosted by musical legends Lol Tolhurst from The Cure and Budgie from Siouxsie and the Banshees, they bring a unique perspective when interviewing their guests. It often comes across like a group of friends talking and gossiping - I especially love the episode with Shirley Manson (who also hosts a great podcast herself called The Jump with Shirley Manson).

5. Lived Through That

Why this podcast?

Well, I kind of have to pick my own podcast, right? I guess not - but I couldn't find one of my favorite music podcasts on this list (Song exploder - the best deep dive on music around!) so I'll mention mine! I love producing this show and I'm always excited to share new episodes with the world. These are some of my favorite artists talking about a pivotal moment in their lives - I sometimes liken it to a rock and roll "This American Life" - but I've been told it comes across more like a musical "The Moth." Not too shabby to be compared with!
