Who am I?

I currently live inn Vienna, Austria with my husband (Oliver) and dog (Linus). We very much enjoy hanging out in parks and walking along the canal. I am originally from Johannesburg, South Africa but I have been fortunate enough to have lived and studied in several different countries (including Sweden, Canada, and South Korea). I love cycle touring, eating delicious food, reading, and improv! I recently completed my PhD and am looking forward to seeing what comes next! My PhD was in geography but I could more broadly be thought to belong to the field of "animal studies" or "critical animal studies." These are trans- and inter-disciplinary fields that are interested in how animals are part of society and the ways in which they experience the world. Considering our currently uneven and often unjust relationships with animals I think it is essential that we learn more about them as well as the ways in which they live and are part of the world. There is indeed a need for a better lexicon and scope for socially understanding animals. "The animal turn" in scholarship has been exciting and there is so much wonderful work underway. When I was relatively new to animal studies I decided to launch "The Animal Turn Podcast" as a means of better learning about the key concepts in animal studies. I have now completed five seasons!

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

The Animal Turn Podcast is a show about key concepts in animal studies. Each season is set around a specific theme with every episode focusing on a concept from that theme. I interview experts from those fields about the concept. Every season is finished with a grad review in which I talk to graduate students abut what they have learned over the course of the season. It is a show that hopefully teaches and creates space for fascination.

What is my podcast playlist about?

The Animal Turn Podcast is only one of several podcasts related to animal studies. Each of these shows have slightly different formats and ways of approaching the topic. And, of course, we post content at different intervals. For folks interested in animal studies it is useful to have a list of podcasts that might help them to learn more about the field.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. The Animal Turn

Why this podcast?

Animals are increasingly at the forefront of research questions – not as shadows to human stories, or as beings we want to understand biologically, or for purely our benefit – but as beings who have histories, stories, and geographies of their own. Claudia Hirtenfelder talks to animal studies scholars about some of the most important ideas emerging out of this recent turn. Each season is set around a particular theme so that the ways in which these different concepts hang together (or not) become more apparent, allowing for deeper reflection and consideration not only about animals but about the broader fields in which they are now being considered. To that end, each season finishes with a Grad Review to help tie some themes together and identify potential points of divergence. There is tons of bonus content too!
