"When we are confronted by any crisis, the period of recovery often offers opportunities to emerge better and stronger than before. If we are imaginative, innovative, and perhaps a bit patient, we can deliver a superior and more valuable experience in attending our conferences with the bonus of making them accessible to more of our members. I believe that we can and will emerge from this challenging time as a stronger SPE, able to deliver more to our members".
In this episode, Shauna Noonan discusses strengthening the SPE Conference Experience.
Each month, Shauna joins The SPE Podcast to discuss her President's Column and to share her SPE journey. We'll end each of these podcasts asking the audience an interactive question.

Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan
2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization’s Engineering Core
From Shauna's July President's Column:
Of all the programs that SPE offers, the most rewarding and enjoyable ones for me personally are the conferences. I love walking the floor of an exhibition hall, discovering the latest technology advancements, and listening to the various product demonstrations. I look forward to running into fellow SPE members in the vast conference halls and catching up on what they’ve been doing since we last met. When exiting the room of a technical session, I like being able to turn to the person next to me and ask their opinion about the presentations we just heard. Finally, I relish being able to attend the receptions and luncheons to network with industry colleagues. I attribute most of my career achievements to those moments of connecting with others and learning from them during SPE conferences.

SPE Gaia Talks: Measuring What Matters
The SPE Podcast
06/24/20 • 54 min
The panel addresses sustainability in the oil and gas industry using the lens of “Measuring what Matters”. Notwithstanding current global socio-economic conditions, oil and gas is being held to account on its environmental, social and governance performance against a backdrop of climate change and of biodiversity depletion.
Current sustainability measurement efforts by the industry are largely carried out to satisfy external stakeholders and even then, very imperfectly to the detriment of the public, policymakers, investors and the industry itself. This panel discussion will look at how better to serve these communities and in particular the internal stakeholders - the business decision-makers in business administration, operations, R&D and commercial roles – so that they and their business can better enable development that is truly sustainable. Our expert panel discusses the significant steps toward fit-for-decision data for both internal and external stakeholders.
PANELISTS:
• Pavan Sukhdev, CEO GIST Advisory
• Antoine Halff, Co-founder & Chief Analyst, Kayrros
• Poppy Kalesi, Global Energy Director, Environmental Defense Fund
• Vanessa Miler-Fels – Director of Energy Innovation and Impact, Microsoft
MODERATOR:
Tatiana Mitrova – Director of Energy Center, Moscow School of Management

Staying Strong with Shauna Noonan
The SPE Podcast
08/25/20 • 34 min
"Members often ask me if I am disappointed with how the latter portion of my presidency was affected by the pandemic and the crash of oil prices. To be honest, I am not disappointed. I was able to visit many sections as President-Elect and speak at many events; however, the role of SPE President is much greater than that. This time was critical to serve as chair of the SPE Board and guide our society through an inflection point, requiring us to anticipate how to deliver on our mission to our members in a post-pandemic world".
In this episode, Shauna Noonan shares the status of each goal she set while being this year's SPE President and the pandemic’s impact on it.

Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan
2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization’s Engineering Core
From Shauna's August President's Column:
I am proud to be part of a society with so many strong leaders, contributors, and champions within its ranks. As I traveled the globe to engage with our membership, my pride in being a petroleum engineer and professional in the oil and gas industry grew with each visit. I want to thank all the sections and chapters that hosted me, and I pledge to keep my promise to meet with sections where visits were canceled due to the pandemic. I want to thank our SPE staff from all our regional offices for their constant efforts to implement and maintain the programs and create the tools identified in SPE’s strategic plan. I also want to express my gratitude to my employer, Occidental Petroleum, for its steadfast support and understanding throughout my journey as SPE President. It is one thing for an individual to see the value that SPE provides in terms of competency development, but it is even better to work for a company that recognizes it as well. As I worked to make our society stronger, I, too, have gained strength from this memorable experience.
