EP 9 | Frank King
Out of Whack
04/12/21 • 36 min
On this episode, Lisa and I interview Frank King!
A Suicide Prevention and Post-vention Public Speaker and Trainer, Frank was a writer for The Tonight Show for 20 years, is a Corporate Comedian, syndicated humor columnist, and podcast personality, who was featured on CNN's Business Unusual.
Depression and suicide run his family. He's thought about killing himself more times than he can count. He's fought a lifetime battle with depression, and thoughts of ending his life, turning that long dark journey of the soul into a TED Talk, "A Matter of Laugh or Death," www.FrankTEDTalk.com and sharing his lifesaving insights on Mental and Emotional Health Awareness, with corporation, association, youth (middle school and high school), and college audiences www.TheSuicidePreventionSpeaker.com
As an Inspirational and Motivational Public Speaker and Trainer he uses the life lessons from the above, as well as lessons learned as a rather active consumer of healthcare, both mental and physical, to start the conversation giving people who battle Mental and Emotional Illness permission to give voice to their feelings and experiences surrounding depression and suicide, and to create a common pool of knowledge in which those who suffer, and those who care about them, can swim.
And doing it by coming out, as it were, and standing in his truth, and doing it with humor. He believes that where there is humor there is hope, where there is laughter there is life, nobody dies laughing.
He is currently promoting his new book on men's mental fitness, Guts, Grit, and the Grind, with two coauthors. He lives in Eugene, OR and speaks around the US, and all over the world.

EP 34 | Dr. Liz Cho
Out of Whack
10/18/21 • 55 min
Our friend, the physician and mommy to two beautiful daughters, Dr. Liz Cho drops by to talk about the past two years of COVID madness, takes some questions, and chats about our favorite show, The Crown.
Liz is not only a front-line worker and hero to us all, she is also the proud mommy of two beautiful daughters. We’ll also talk about the craziness of parenting, working, and all to boo-boos that our kids get and what to do about them.
Liz was born in Seoul, Korea and moved to the U.S. when she was five years old.
Her family settled in Long Island, NY which was a huge culture shock for her and her family. Liz stayed there until she moved to Boston to attend undergraduate school at Tufts University.
She wanted to move back to New York so she went to medical school at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She ended up staying there for her residency in emergency medicine which she completed in 2011.
Liz chose emergency medicine as a career because she loves being able to care for patients when they need care urgently. Being an emergency physician means she never gets bored at work. She says that It’s definitely not the easiest job in the world, but it can be incredibly rewarding.
In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family. She says, “watching my children grow up before my eyes is probably one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. I also love watching Korean dramas, and I am currently learning how to play the violin.”

SPECIAL | Selwyn Jones
Out of Whack
05/25/21 • 53 min
On the 1-year anniversary of George Floyd's death, we talk to his maternal uncle, Selwyn Jones, or Unc, as Floyd called him—a man large in stature and spirit, and a fixture in Floyd's life.
Jones is remarkable in the family for having evaded the traps awaiting poor Black men, through pro sports and later a career in sales and hospitality, and he tried to lay a path for Floyd. “I talked to him often,” Jones said. He told George many times, “Man, you know you need to get your butt right.”
Jones, who lives in central South Dakota, a six-hour drive west of Minneapolis, visited Floyd frequently when his nephew moved north from Houston. “It breaks my heart to know that happened to one of mine,” he said. “And I just... I cannot stop.” - excerpts from GQ Magazine, December 3, 2020.

EP 20 | Joshua Shea
Out of Whack
06/28/21 • 60 min
Josh is an author and public speaker, sharing his story and educating others about addiction.
Joshua believes that if we, as a society, can begin to talk more about pornography addiction and mental health, people may be able to address their addictions before they devolve to the unhealthy and criminal places where his very own hit rock bottom. For years, on the outside, people only saw him as a successful magazine publisher, film festival founder and city councilor.
Joshua hid his mental health issues, pornography and alcohol addictions from the world. The end to this façade came in 2013 after engaging a teen girl in an online chatroom. For this action he served six months in jail and credits this experience to being the wake up call needed. Joshua credits his higher-power for giving him the strength to fix his very broken self.
Like most in recovery, Joshua understands the issues better than the non-addict. However he does not wish his stories, experiences, thoughts and opinions be misinterpreted as any definitive answers.
Does he consider himself a pornography addiction expert? At this point, yes. Unfortunately, it’s not hard to be a pornography addiction expert these days. He does believe that what makes him an expert is that he has a multitude of third-hand knowledge from research and interactions with so many pornography addicts.
