Leaving medicine: How to Quit Without Ruining Your Life
Disrupting Doctors Careers
10/08/22 • 40 min
Episode Question:
How do you quit medicine and what does it actually involve?
In this week's episode, I spent some quality time with Dr. Lauretta Ihonor; a medical doctor who realised very early on that Medicine wasn't for her and left to eventually become a Content Strategist, Health Tech Consultant and wellness entrepreneur.. with lots of exciting hats on the way to include Fashion designer and CNN producer!
We are also joined with our new Founders Associate and dual trained medical Consultant Dr. Ola Abbas.
In this episode, Lauretta shares:
- Why she continued to pursue a career in Medicine despite knowing that it wasn't right for her.
- How she went about quitting her job and the Psychiatric evaluation she was asked to do in relation to this.
- How she explored unrelated fields beyond medicine and ended up in Fashion and later as a producer for CNN.
- Advice she has for doctors who are currently looking at quitting Medicine for good.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Fashion was an experience that was completely opposite to medicine
- If you are moving into a completely different field study opens up internships you can only access as a student
- Age and prior experience helped turn the internship into a job
- Coming from a disadvantaged background can make you seek visibility and external validation
- Put a plan into place before you make a move from your current role
- Understand your motivations and get clear about what you want to do before you move
- If your current job is stressing you out, change to another interim job. As a doctor, you can work remotely and be paid well even if it isn’t your end goal
- There is a door you choose to go through and you can always go back
BEST MOMENTS
‘My contract told you everything except how to quit your job’
‘I’ve always been interested and passionate about natural health’
‘For me, the undertone has always been health and communication’

How to Cope with Doctor Stress and Doctor Burnout - Do We All Need Therapy?
Disrupting Doctors Careers
09/17/22 • 36 min
Doctors’ stress and burnout levels are higher than ever before. And sadly, this is unlikely to change anytime soon. So, how can doctors best cope with doctor stress to prevent doctor burnout?
Could therapy be the answer? Or should we all just shake it off and get on with the job?
Those are the big questions today’s episode looks at. And to answer them, I’m talking with Dr Will Gao, COO of Suvera Health, a virtual clinical services company.
He shares the pressures and mental health challenges he faced as a doctor. And he discusses what he has learned about the role of therapy in coping with the challenges faced in clinical practice - namely doctor stress and burnout.
We explore how Will’s journey has influenced his move into an alternative medical career in which he now supports a thriving community of people in his company.
Finally, we also look at whether all doctors should have therapy throughout our careers - from medical school to clinical practice.
Should therapy be part of a holistic process to support overall wellbeing?
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Doctor stress and burnout is common and can affect all doctors at all stages of their careers
- Everyone should make their well-being a priority
- My perception of therapy was that it was something I didn’t need, I thought I could just get out of it on my own
- Being a doctor and caring for others is a strong identity and you want to feel you aren’t letting others down
- We should be more open to being vulnerable saying we are not okay
- There was huge value in being able to talk to someone professionally
- For me now, therapy is a preventative and part of maintaining my well being
- Therapy helps you to understand yourself on a much deeper level and in a completely different way
- Trust is a priority in getting the most out of therapy
- People are the assets of your company, the individuals are what’s important and therapy should be offered to everyone
BEST MOMENTS
‘The most important thing is that you trust the person’
‘It’s fundamental to everything to feel well about yourself and think clearly’
‘To support other people you have to be able to look after yourself’

An NHS Consultant Salary isn’t as High as You Think - and Other Senior Doctor Myths
Disrupting Doctors Careers
11/13/22 • 41 min
Is it worth your time, life, and energy to become a Consultant in your chosen medical specialty? Especially when being a Consultant in the NHS isn't the holy grail it once used to be.
I’m with Dr Ola Abbas, Founder's Associate at Medic Footprints and a dually trained Consultant in Acute Medicine and Intensive Care, talking about the misconceptions around getting to the top, salary, leadership and management training and the alternatives to becoming a Consultant.
We also discuss the questions you need to ask when looking at making a change and why Ola is divorcing the NHS despite being a Consultant in two specialties.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- What I thought it would be is not what it really is really is.
- In the private sector, it's more streamlined, and efficient and things get done. There is a result, payment is better and there is recognition.
- As doctors, we don’t think about the different ways we can use our skills.
- When I got into business, I realised I was trading my time and skills for very little money in the NHS.
- You have to work your way through projects, leadership, management, and teaching to move up as a Consultant.
- Make sure you have the appropriate expectations for the job and top up your financial education.
- It's not about the salary at the end of the day, there are more priorities in life.
- I can see what’s out there and that I can have a bigger voice and make a positive impact in other avenues that speak to my passion.
- I’m divorcing the NHS and for me, it’s to be in alignment with my values and honor my priorities in life.
BEST MOMENTS
‘We are massively underpaid for the risk and responsibility we take on.’
‘As a consultant, 95% of my job is managing people and politics and 5% is clinical.’
‘When you get to consultant level you have to keep climbing the mountain to distinguish yourself from other consultants.’
‘It's about values, recognition and having a voice.’

Want to Know What Career Opportunities are Available for Doctors? Take This First Step!
Disrupting Doctors Careers
06/25/22 • 8 min
In this episode, I discuss the creation of the Medic Footprints platform and why the landscape of career opportunities is changing.
I look at the vital importance of the transferable skill sets that doctors possess and why it’s critical that doctors have access to diverse career opportunities - meaning they can make the impact they want and they are happier and healthier in a career they chose.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Burnout amongst doctors is sky high and many want to use their transferable skills in different ways, beyond the usual career pathways
- Doctors are reaching a point of burnout and leaving
- An interview is a two-way process, the doctor attending the interview has made a decision to attend and the company is interviewing because they see someone who is an asset
- We are not just a number or a statistic we are talented, ambitious human beings who joined medicine and healthcare to help and support patients
- Medical careers were generally designed to be a one size fits all as it fits into workforce planning
- A one size fits all solution is not a sustainable one and it will continue to be a problem as we move into the future of work
- Doctors are one of the most talented workforces we have on this planet so it's critical that we make the most of their transferable skills and reach their potential for the benefit of everyone
BEST MOMENTS
‘I’m on a mission to connect one million doctors across the world with the best and most diverse career opportunities
‘We are disrupting doctors' careers, transforming the way we think about doctors' roles in the wider healthcare system and in society as a whole’

How can Doctors become Content Creators?
Disrupting Doctors Careers
04/08/23 • 48 min
In this episode, I’m talking to the co-founder of Peerr, Abdul Rahyead about the journey that led to the creation of Peerr, a platform that enables content creators to share what they know
We also discuss content creation as a career for doctors and why being a content creator can increase the surface area of the opportunities that will come your way and help you to get the roles that you really want
Listen in and hear great advice from Abdul on getting started in content creation and sharing your passion and knowledge
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Medics don’t really know how their value is and don’t know what to charge for their work outside of their 9 to 5 job
- We could see the content creator market booming, people wanted the acknowledgement and the financial benefit
- There was a need for a platform for medics to create content where they could also earn money and Peerr has developed into a range of modalities for teaching
- Brands are happy to pay and sponsor influencers for content
- If you can combine and collect everyone’s content together and combine the reach brands are more interested
- It’s collectively putting out that content and getting that reach
- We see the future as the vast majority of professionals will be content creators on the side
- Peerr is a platform that brings everything together on one platform for professionals
- The most powerful things you can do to monetise content is to build distribution and an audience
- Identify the people who are consuming the content and then get in front of them
BEST MOMENTS
‘Brands are now more interested because that’s what they are paying for reach’
‘It’s creating an economy, an eco-system where the financial benefits are kicked back to the creators’
‘All doctors have to learn to be their own best self-marketers in the way that’s right for them’

Doctors Leaving Medicine: Do You Need More Qualifications to Start an Alternative Career?
Disrupting Doctors Careers
10/30/22 • 15 min
Episode Question: Do I need more qualifications to get started on an alternative career?
I’m looking at one of the most common questions asked by Doctors who are looking at alternative careers and sharing an overview of why it’s important to understand how a qualification will help, its value and what the alternative options are.
If you are looking at an alternative career it's completely doable without additional qualifications because as doctors we bring considerable skills and experience so understanding the value and reasons for additional qualifications is key
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- As doctors, we are institutionalised in exam-taking and academia
- Some of the most successful people in the world do not have any qualifications. They have created value without requiring an institutional stamp
- A lot of doctors who go into occupational medicine don’t do more than a diploma but use their experience as a vocation
- Extra qualifications can be done to establish credibility and authority in a new area and as an opportunity to fill knowledge gaps
- All qualifications have a price in terms of time and money
- There are qualifications and courses and both add value in different ways
- Consider carefully the return on your investment when undertaking a qualification
BEST MOMENTS
‘You can get onto an alternative career without further qualifications, it's completely doable’
‘When you are a doctor considering an alternative career you need to think more laterally’
‘I’m a recovering qualification junkie’

Networking for Doctors - How to Mega Your Chances of Getting a Job You Want
Disrupting Doctors Careers
06/03/23 • 41 min
Doctors often perceive networking as a dirty word, associating it with insincere intentions or manipulative practices. However, networking is an indispensable skill to develop, particularly if you aspire to thrive professionally or advance in your career by exploring exceptional and well-suited opportunities.
Networking is the art of forging connections based on genuine relationships without hidden agendas or expectations. The key to cultivating authentic and valuable relationships and networks lies in offering value upfront. Providing value without expecting anything in return is laying the foundation for meaningful connections that can create opportunities in future.
In this episode of Disrupting Doctors Career podcast, we delve into the world of networking with Dr Jonathan Andrews, the Chief Medical Officer of Certific, part of the Medic Footprint furniture and the ultimate networker.
In the conversation, he shares more about why you need to network, different networking styles and the value of networking. He provides incredible insights and sheds light on the undeniable value of networking and how it opens doors to opportunities, fosters collaborations, and provides a platform for visibility.
If you are in the process of changing careers, moving up or moving into industries, listen in and learn how to leverage networking as a tool to uncover job opportunities available to you and increase your wins.
What You Will Learn:
- [00:01] Intro and what in for you in today’s show
- [02:55] Networking statistics from Hubspot and Dr Jonathan's perspective
- [08:10] What is networking for? To get a job or build relationships? Find out
- [13:36] Dr Jonathan's networking rules and how to set clear goals for your strategy
- [23:46] Different styles of networking you can leverage to grow your career
- [27:38] How to approach and talk to people to build a meaningful relationship

- [38:05] Professionalizing your industry alternative careers with Medic Footprints
- [38:38] Dr Jonathan's final word on LinkedIn DM and virtual coffees

Standout Quotes:

“If you provide value, you're offering something, and if you have something to offer, people who are looking for that might become interested in it, so provide value upfront for nothing and with no expectations in return.”- Dr Jonathan Andrews [16:53]
