Houston Texans Podcast: Searching For Clarity

Battle Red Blog: for Houston Texans fans

play

05/22/20 • 82 min

The 2020 NFL Offseason is pretty much over. It’s time to hang out and safely enjoy the sun until season previews are published and training camps open up, if they ever do it all. The Texans have resigned their own players, they’ve made trades, they sifted through free agency, completed the 2020 NFL Draft, and I still am perplexed by what they were trying to accomplish.

To find some greater clarity to discover what the plan was, if there was even a plan at all, Rivers McCown and bigfatdrunk hopped on the podcast to review the Texans overall offseason, and search for some deeper meaning. Topics include: the need for speed, if hearts have changed since the DeAndre Hopkins trade, what Tim Kelly and Anthony Weaver add to the team, which defensive prayer is most likely to be answered, how Houston fits in the rest of the AFC South, and most importantly, the joys of Deshaun Watson.

Houston Texans Podcast: POWER RANKINGS

The tsunami of free agency has already crashed upon the shore. The NFL Draft is over. The meat and potatoes of the 2020 NFL offseason have been devoured. Now is the time for big sky living, grass hill sitting, to be fully in tune with the right here and right now. Football resides solely in nostalgia, and remembering what was. Soon we will close our virtual doors down, scrape the content barrel, and think about the before, but now, now is as good of a time as ever to review what has occurred this offseason, and where the NFL stands before poolside sipping.

In this episode Matt and Taylor rank all teams 32-1 and separate them into four groups, rebuilding, maybe, just maybe, playoff hopefuls, and contenders. Topics include: the pretty days ahead for the Cincinnati kitty-kats, the sad state of affairs in Chicago, if Arizona or Houston scores more points, the impending drama in the AFC South, and how much per year does Dak really deserve.

Everything is in and of itself. Without the opposite, a reference point, it’s impossible to have the other. You can’t have love without hate, or courage without cowardice, or, in this case, constantly hating Bill O’Brien without understanding what he does well.

The Texans’ fanbase is split among those who decided that O’Brien isn’t the person to get the Texans past the Divisional Round after years of first down runs, sticking to awful tall and white or athletically limited and intelligent quarterbacks and wasting the prime of J.J. Watt’s career, Alfred Blue 183 carry seasons, the inability to work with others, stagnated ball control offenses, being flat out unprepared in big games, not utilizing skill players well, and of course, now that he’s the general manager, this means getting crappy value in the trades made, and acting in a myopic and desperate manner.

Those who feel this way are usually too far on this side though, and lose their argument, by failing to admit what O’Brien is good at, and those who still like O’Brien as a head coach, are maybe holding onto embers and antiquated arguments.

Everyone knows about the bad, but the good is rarely discussed. So for this episode, Matt, Carlos, and Texans Thoughts (Jordan). go through and discuss what O’Brien does well, and by doing so, we will all have a better understanding of the Texans’ head coach and general manager.

The 2020 NFL Draft review episode squirted an extra leg, and delivered this little bit of Houston Texans analysis. Jordan (Texans Thoughts) and I discussed the Laremy Tunsil extension, and the Tashaun Gipson release. Give this cute little bonus a listen.

The 2020 NFL Draft went as good as it could go from a I love the Houston Texans perspective. A big run on offensive tackles and wide receivers. Four quarterbacks selected. Cornerbacks scooped off the board. Aside from the expected front seven defenders: Derrick Brown, Javon Kinlaw, K’Lavon Chaisson; this portion of the defense went relatively untouched. Houston is now set up to grab first round front seven talent without having to trade up.

For this episode, Matt, Kenneth, and Jordan (Texans thoughts) review day one and preview day two. Topics include: our favorite selections, time being a flat circle for Aaron Rodgers, if we ever thought Houston would trade up, our #40 desires, and Saturday sleepers.

Houston Texans Podcast: 2020 Mock Drafting

Sports aren't dead. They've just morphed into entirely different forms. Stocks are sports, video games are sports, the numbers you track on your iFitness are sports, podcasts are sports, The Way Back is sports, reality television is sports, but one sport reigns supreme over all the others, the 2020 NFL Draft. For three months the regular season has been underway. Twitter threads. Mockdraftable spiderwebs. Youtube sleuthing. Frame 237 throwing motion analysis. And, of course, mock drafts.

This is the last and only mock draft of the year from us here, and then, finally, this weekend, the 2020 NFL Draft begins. I have no idea what we are going to do after that.

Topics include: will Miami take Tua, how many offensive tackles could be selected in the first round, pigtails or pony tails, Houston's 2020 outlook, the run on wide receivers, and if Kansas City will add more scoops to their offensive sundae.

Since there are no points, or algorithm that this information can be plugged in to to come with a victory we need your help loyal listener. Topics include: how many touchdowns is Bobby Boucher worth, where does friend of the podcast Dennis Quaid get drafted, the Golden Retriever, if A.J. Soprano could have developed into a tight end if he wasn’t stuck playing defensive tackle, and our favorite football movie.
