While Quebec was slow to enter and embrace the haze game, they've delivered on a level that has made the province some of the best producers of the style in the country. Montreal's Messorem Bracitorium opened in the summer of 2019 and the fanfare was immediate - clearly the hazeboiz and hazegirlz were ready for something local that paralleled their US faves. Co-Founder and Graphic Designer Marc-André joined Cee and Nate to chat about what's been happening since Messo's last podcast appearance in early 2020, how their lager program has become a massive part of the business, why their attention to detail has made them who they are, the pushback they received from local breweries, how important their merch has been to the brand, how they've upgraded their space and created one of the best patios in the city, and how they've been building their name internationally via collabs and festivals. They got into Il Fut Un Temps: Indulgent Mexican Lager, Il Était Une Fois : Sécheresse Helles Lager, Destin Certain IPA, and Temporalis #0017 Double IPA. Such a fire chat - cheers!

One of the reasons the BAOS team started visiting Hamilton, ON was MERIT Brewing, and it's well overdue to have them on the pod. Co-Founder and Head Brewer Aaron Spinney, affectionately known as Spinney to everybody but his mother, joined Cee and Nate to chat about his beginnings in beer via Niagara College, his history with Sawdust City's Sam Corbeil (friend of the show), his passion for wine beer hybrids, how they approach distribution, why breweries should be able to ship country-wide, beer verticals, Spinney dove into some Hamilton history, and why Hamilton is such a great city. They cracked six huge beers - 107 Dortmunder Export Lager, Strange Animal IPA, Fine Line Orange Wine Lager, Happy Place Cab Franc Skin & Vine Saison, Nowhere Imperial Stout with Syrah, Malbec & Merlot, and By And By Belgian-Style Tripel with Pinot Noir, Gamay and Dornfelder. Almost 4 hours on this one - cheers!

This episode was a milestone in a bunch of ways - it's the highest podcast episode number we've gotten to ever; it's the first in-person pod we've done in the Adjunct Series; and it was the first time a brewer came to our home for a chat. Love it. Troy Baxter of Badlands hung out with Cee and Tiff to talk about everything surrounding the costs of craft beer, including the hop and grain harvest issues, why beer prices rarely move, big beer costs vs craft costs, why some beers cost more than others, how inflation has affected beer, Ontario vs Alberta tax rates, beer sales over the years, and some deeper finance talk around CPI, economics and money supply. They got into some of Troy's home-roasted Brazillian coffee beans via Morning Roast, along with two Badlands beers - Badlands Pils and Bike Tree (2024). This was an extremely valuable pod - cheers!

We talk to a lot of craft breweries here on BAOS, but we don't talk to enough beer bars so we were stoked to get Dave Perlman of Evalyn's Tap House in Gowanus, Brooklyn, New York on the pod! Dave joined Cee to chat about his extensive history in the restaurant business, how he created the boozy brunch with his restaurant Essex NYC, how the Manhattan craft beer scene is different from that of Brooklyn, why Gowanus is a great neighbourhood for a beer bar, the landscape of New York craft beer, his connection with Connecticut and Long Island, and a full run-through of their phenomenal beer menu. They cracked open some of Dave's fave beers that are available at Evalyn right now, including Torch & Crown's Strada Italian Pilsner, Jack's Abby Craft Lagers Shipping Out Of Boston Amber Lager, Marlowe Artisinal Ales Eager To Share, Fat Orange Cat Baby Kittens NEIPA and SingleCut Beersmiths Heavy Boots of Lead Imperial Stout. See y'all in BK, cheers!

Over this season of the podcast, we've touched on the booming segment of non-alcoholic beer, but this is the first time we've really gotten deep. Ted Fleming, Founder of Partake Brewing, Canada's premier craft non-alcoholic brewery, joined Cee to tell his story of why he started the brewery, he explains Partake's unique approach to NA beer, and where he sees NA beer going in the future. The fellas crushed Partake's Blonde, Red, Pale Ale, IPA, Stout, Peach Gose and Radler - the soberest podcast ever, but certainly one of the most informative. Enjoy (responsibly), cheers!

It's our favourite time of the year... Looking back at the year that was is always a blast, so when Cee and Nate got together to select, chat about and, of course, drink beers from their favourite breweries in 2023, they knew it was about to go down. Twenty-twenty-three was a spectacular year for Ontario craft beer, with some phenomenal new breweries opening their doors, some legendary breweries saying goodbye, and there were even some breweries that had been around a while but were new to BAOS. We announced our Brewery of the Year, too, which was a first for this amazing company. No spoilers here, just watch or listen and enjoy some Ontario craft beer. Cheers!
