All Pop, No Culture

All Pop, No Culture

Our first 81 episodes are what we now consider APNC 1.0 with our original crew: Opie, Pete, Kevin, Alex, and later, David. Through the onset of COVID and life changes, the podcast began to evolve. It was the end of an era, but we loved this crew and the memories we made. You'll notice that our earliest episodes are not on YouTube. The addition of video was never in the plans, but came to life as a surprise side effect of COVID. Going into 2022, Pete and Kevin took the show in a new direction after losing the rest of the original crew. They found their groove almost immediately with appearances from Andrew and Andy, who immediately became show regulars. Throughout what is now considered APNC 2.0, hosting has waffled back and forth between Pete and Kevin, and the cast fluctuates between any combination of the 4, and sometimes even their friend Kim, but the content is always flowing. 2022 has been a very consistent year for the gang and they look to keep it rolling into 2023 and beyond.

Episode 45 - Something Old Is Made... Old... Again The guys get in their way back machine this week and put together an episode structured remarkably like their earlier episodes. There’s streaming picks, a movie watched by all, and a game of trivia that a certain someone obviously dominates at... Pete jump on the grenade early and talks about the 90’s classic City Slickers. He does take some heat for watching something so old, but it’s a universally loved film, so the guys are able to let that go. But, as usual, Pete goes one step too far and goes even further back by watching the 80’s G.I. Joe cartoon. The nostalgia train only goes so far... Next up, Kevin makes short work of his time acknowledging and praising season 6 of Schitt’s Creek. Sure, he talked about it last week, but it’s THAT good. Next he discusses the Ben Platt show The Politician on Netflix and gives it an overall solid review. Next up, Opie watches The Banker on Apple TV+ which he gives a pretty stellar review of. He then does on a virtual courtship of Michelle Dockery by watching Defending Jacob on Apple TV+ and then turning around and watching the 2019 Downton Abbey movie. Finally Alex jumps all aboard the Pete Express and watches the classic Brendan Fraser flick, Bedazzled. He then takes a hard turn right back to Alex-Land by talking about The Last Kingdom on Netflix. And just in case that didn’t satiate your need for Alex-ness, he also talks the Lord of the Rings video game, Shadow of War. Finally, before the break, they guys talk about the new Chris Hemsworth film on Netflix, Extraction. Reviews are about what you’d expect if you’ve watched the trailer, but certainly no one hated it. After the break, the guys play a 2003 Entertainment version of Trivial Pursuit which puts Alex into a deeper hole than usual. Will he win? You’ll have to listen to find out!

So you’re living in the apocalypse and trying to figure out how to get by? Well, the guys have finally mastered Zoom and are back to invade your earholes. What’s crazier, they’ve decided to use this technology to please your eyes, too. That’s right, we are officially posting video to YouTube. If it’s good enough for Colbert, it’s good enough for us! This week, the guys go down the massive rabbit hole of covering what they’ve been watching in quarantine. Honestly, you’d thing this list would be significantly longer, but hey, it’s something, right? Kevin kicks us off by talking about the techno thriller Devs on Hulu. He follows that up with the magnificence Schitt’s Creek. After starting off with great TV, he switches to video games and talks the Final Fantasy VII Remake and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. He finishes that up with a very interesting review of NBC’s Manifest. Next up, Opie talks movies first with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He then goes against his usual grain and talks video games with Red Dead Redemption 2. He then finishes us off with TV and discusses Killing Eve, Homeland, Happy, and Little Fires Everywhere. For the record, that’s more than 5, right? Speaking of struggling with numbers, Pete goes next and talks about Apple TV+’s Beastie Boys documentary and Netflix’s Dead to Me. That’s right. We said 5. The “producer” gave us 2. Maybe Opie will loan him a few. Last but not least (that was Pete), we have Alex. He covers a couple of documentary type offerings in the Galaxy Quest documentary, Never Surrender, and the Netflix cut of the Dave Chapelle Mark Twain Prize. Next he jumps to TV and talks Scrubs and Peaky Blinders. After that he also goes to video games and discusses Elder Scrolls Online. He finally works us to completion with What We Do In The Shadows. As a group, the guys do what they intended to do months ago and talk about the Pixar film, Onward. The opinions are shockingly not what you’d expect them to be, so definitely pay attention to that part. After a quick break, the guys jump onto the current “One Has To Go” trend and choose between a few huge entertainment properties. They add a little special sauce to the end of that segment by flipping it on it’s head, so stay tuned to the end!

The guys are back, after another unplanned break. No we aren’t going bi...weekly (see what I did there?). The group is back together, sans Pete. Where is Pete you may ask. We have an explanation for you in the intro and it’s super special, so listen in to find out! This week the guys run down so streaming and movie picks really quick. With Pete out, Opie, Alex, and Kevin cruise through the picks with blinding speed. There are some good suggestions in there so definitely pay attention! As an aside, before recording, the guys discussed possibly working on the show being closer to an hourlong show. For this reason, they forgo a break to do a short segment on DC movies through the year. When all was said and done, the flow carried them into another incredibly long episode! As you’d imagine, the conversation often drifts to Marvel, but the guys expertly divert it back to DC ever time... Enjoy this episode. It flowed well and we hope you enjoy it. We’ll let you know when our favorite flow wrecker is back in the booth with us, but until then... #wheresPete #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill #amazonprime #hulu #appletvplus #disneyplus #popculture #movies #television #youtube #streaming #dccomics #dcmovies #dceu

The guys are back in full force this week with what might be their longest episode to date. They even have a plan. The hell you say?? Check out the intro! They explain the plan. Listen to see if they follow it. Plan or not, here’s what actually happens: The guys kick off the episode by going through a few streaming picks. Pete does his usual and watches something that’s almost irrelevant, but sticks the landing, in West Wing. Next up, Kevin goes over a couple of recent Netflix recommendations, The Stranger and Unbelievable. Both are strong dramatic offerings sure to keep you interested. The guys also throw in a random suggestion for the now cancelled Southland from NBC/TNT After that little bit of info, the conversation turns to the cinema, where Opie recently saw Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen. It sounds like a return to form for Guy and comes highly recommended. Next up, Alex gives us a last work on Onward before it’s impending release. From here, the guys gently stir the ship to the meat and potatoes of this episode. The first half of the show ends with a great segue from the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which Alex has seen and didn’t seem to hate, much to everyone’s shock. From there, they use the video game premise to steer into one of the best new shows of 2020, Mythic Quest on AppleTV+ After the break, the guys come back and have a shockingly long and intimate conversation about their favorite video games over the years. There is a noticeable difference in types of players and definitely well worth a listen!! After a longer than anticipated hiatus, the guys are back, much like Vanilla Ice, with a brand new invention... No? I thought for sure that joke would land... Anyway, the guys end up recording a shorter, more cohesive show this time around and skip the usual streaming picks. Our resident cat whisperer, Alex, was unable to find any cats to whisper to, so he switched to birds this week. That’s right, he bit the bullet and watched Birds of Prey so no one else has to. He all but confirms the review from the previous episode and saves the listeners time and money. As organically as the guys can do it, conversation moves to a new segment, “This Quarter in Cinema”. As with most things, the guys have taken liberty with terms quarter AND cinema. In their estimation, you need to see maybe two movies this quarter. Which one? Listen and find out, you charlatans!! The guys finish off with what is likely their last Oscar discussion until the late 2020 award season. Enjoy the show!! #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill #amazonprime #hulu #appletvplus #disneyplus #popculture #movies #television #youtube #streaming #cbsallaccess #birdsofprey #alexlovescats #sonicthehedgehog #aquietplace2 #onward #Mulan #oscars #oscars2020 #1917 #joker #parasite

After a week away, the guys come back with a plethora of picks. In a move no one (except anyone who understands the APNC level of organization) could have seen coming, the guys have eliminate assigned streaming picks and are now officially streaming at will. God help you all... Pete kicks things off by discussing the new space comedy, Avenue 5, on HBO. The pilot episode gets differing reviews from Pete and Opie, so you can imagine how that went. Pete also shed some of his self respect and watched Detective Pikachu. This leads to a discussion of the very entertaining YouTube series, Pitch Meetings. Next up, Kevin changes things up even more by discussing the PS4 video game, Days Gone. He and Alex discuss the game until Opie taps out. Kevin then discusses his left turn into a completely different streaming service, CBS All Access. He takes the time to cover the appetizer, Evil, the new series staring Michael Emerson (of LOST fame), and Mike Colter (star of Netflix’s Luke Cage). Finally, though, he gets to the reason for starting CBS at all, the new series Picard. This spiritual continuation of Star Trek The Next Generation gets Alex and Kevin once again waxing nostalgic and breaks Opie again. Next up, Opie talks about the new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO. He follows that up with yet another YouTube show, The Hollywood Reporters, Comedy Actor Roundtable. This show is a unique take on the talk show with a Q&A directed at some excellent comedic actors. Alex finishes the streaming portion off with a movie no one should watch, The Layover, on Hulu. The Kate Upton, Alex Dedario project should come with an apology in the description, but its unanimously decided that Alex Dedario is pretty. Is that relevant? Absolutely not... After the break, the guys dip a little more into the Oscar discussion. In an attempt to start 2020 better than they finished 2019, the guys are talking more about, and watching more, the Oscar nominated films, 1917, Joker, and Judy. Enjoy the discussion as the guys dabble in being classy! #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill #amazonprime #hulu #appletvplus #disneyplus #popculture #movies #television #youtube #streaming #cbsallaccess #avenue5 #hughlaurie #detectivepikachu #ryanreynolds #pitchmeetings #ps4 #daysgone #evil #picard #startrek #sirpatrickstewart #curbyourenthusiasm #comedyactorroundtable #thelayover #1917 #joker #judy

The guys manage to make it two weeks in a row to kick off the new year. They start with Streaming picks and play a solid round of trivia after the break. Opie kicks off the streaming picks. He had Hulu this week so of course he watched something on Netflix, That something? Don’t F**k with Cats. Its a very interesting documentary about an absolutely disturbing subject and comes with a very strong recommendation from Opie. Next up, Pete goes to network TV and watches Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. If you’ve seen the trailer, you can probably picture in your head how the other guys respond to this one... After the absolute drubbing that one takes, Pete goes on to give a review of Dolemite is My Name, which the guys all agree is probably really good. Kevin follows this up by giving his final thoughts on the Apple TV+ series, For All Mankind. He the moves on to a less stellar review of Hellboy on HBO. After that, though, he breaks back to good by discussing the first two episodes of The Outsider, also on HBO. Last we go to Alex who has Amazon Prime this week. Sadly, they had no new Joaquin Phoenix offerings so he chose to head over to Apple TV+ and watch Dickinson. While being a bizarre mashup of new and old, it came away with a generally strong review. After the streaming picks, the guys also take a few minutes to go over the new trailers that dropped this week. We have Jared Leto’s Morbius, A Quiet Place II, New Mutants, Birds of Prey, and some new footage of Black Widow. After the break, the guys switch into trivia mode. If you have been paying attention to these games, you probably know who lost, though the winner my surprise you. Sadly for the loser, their punishment will be watching the epic musical Cats. Brutal... #allpopnoculture #hbo #hbogo #hbonow #netflix #netflixandchill #amazonprime #hulu #appletvplus #disneyplus #popculture #movies #television #youtube #streaming #dontfuckwithcats #documentary #zoeysextraordinaryplaylist #dolemiteismyname #eddiemurphy #forallmankind #hellboy #davidharbour #theoutsider #jasonbateman #benmendelsohn #nojoaquinphoenix #dickinson #haileysteinfeld #movietrailers #trailers #morbius #marvel #spiderverse #jaredleto #michaelkeaton #aquietplace2 #emilyblunt #cillianmurphy #newmutants #maisiewilliams #birdsofprey #margotrobbie #blackwidow #scarletjohansen #cats #catsthemusical #trivia

Streaming picks abound as the guys give you everything they're watching (and playing) and you should be too.

After some technical issues on Pete's part, the second half has another round of a trivia game, with Alex having his best showing yet!

Enjoy!
