曾任美国国家卫生研究院(NIH)癌症研究所咨询委员,是迄今唯一获得极高荣誉《自由神奖章》的华裔科学家,并被列入美国国会纪录。
杨定一博士的人生堪称由一连串的惊叹号组成:6岁由台湾随父亲移民巴西,13岁考上巴西利亚医学院,21岁取得美国纽约洛克菲勒康奈尔医学院生化、医学双博士,27岁就担任洛克菲勒大学分子免疫及细胞生物学系主任(洛克菲勒大学虽小,却拥有全世界近30位诺贝尔奖得主),最高峰一年在指标性国际科学期刊上发表超过20篇重要科学论文,如《科学》、《细胞》、《自然》、《美国国家科学院院刊》等,这些期刊台湾只要有一篇刊登,都要上报发布新闻,由此可见他的惊人科学成就。2011诺贝尔生理学或医学奖就颁给他在洛克菲勒的好友--当年一起研究不同免疫反应的拉尔夫——斯坦曼医师,可以说杨定一博士的科学成就已达到诺贝尔奖级。
