The best podcasts for young scientists

share icon

Share

Who am I?

We are two neuroscience PhD students who are curious about the world and our perception of it. We host the podcast, Neuroverse, where we talk about neuroscience, philosophy, and everything in between. We really enjoy learning about science, epistemology and related topics, and most of all, how they are connected to one another. The podcasts in this list have inspired us to pursue science and continue to get us excited about science, so we hope that they will similarly inspire other young and budding scientists!

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Neuroverse is a podcast about all matters from neuroscience to philosophy and beyond. Neuroverse is less about facts and more about questioning the world and what we know about it, made for scientists and non-scientists alike. Our podcast is similar to the podcasts in this playlist, focusing on neuroscience-related topics, so we'd recommend checking out our podcast too!

What is my podcast playlist about?

This podcast playlist includes our personal favourite science podcasts. Some are more factual while some interview expert scientists. But all are rich in information, and a great way to hear about a variety of scientific research without having to go directly to the source (scientific journals). Since we are both young neuroscientists, this list features mainly neuroscience-focused podcasts, but also some more general science podcasts. We'd recommend these podcasts for young scientists who want to learn about how scientific research works, and some of the most exciting novel scientific findings!

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Brain Inspired

Why this podcast?

If you're interested to hear neuroscience researchers talk about their own research, then Brain Inspired is the podcast for you! Each episode includes an interview with a neuroscience researcher lasting around 1.5 hours long. Topics include memory and intelligence, AI, the cells of the brain, and much more. We love how unique each episode is and believe that hearing directly from experts offers a true diversity of perspectives.

Neuroscience and artificial intelligence work better together. Brain inspired is a celebration and exploration of the ideas driving our progress to understand intelligence. I interview experts about their work at the interface of neuroscience, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, philosophy, psychology, and more: the symbiosis of these overlapping fields, how they inform each other, where they differ, what the past brought us, and what the future brings. Topics include computational neuroscience, supervised machine learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning, deep learning, convolutional and recurrent neural networks, decision-making science, AI agents, backpropagation, credit assignment, neuroengineering, neuromorphics, emergence, philosophy of mind, consciousness, general AI, spiking neural networks, data science, and a lot more. The podcast is not produced for a general audience. Instead, it aims to educate, challenge, inspire, and hopefully entertain those interested in learning more about neuroscience and AI.

Why this podcast?

This podcast is a must for anyone looking to learn about neuroscience directly from experts with little background knowledge. Similar to Brain Inspired (above), each episode features an interview with a neuroscience researcher lasting around 1 hour long. The host, Ginger Campbell, does an excellent job at asking the right questions to make the complex topics discussed relatively easy to understand and engage with.

Brain Science is hosted by Virginia "Ginger" Campbell, MD (Podcast Hall of Fame 2022). She is an experienced physician with a passion for exploring how recent discoveries in neuroscience are revealing how our brains make us who we are. This podcast is for non-scientists, scientists, and everyone in between. It features interviews and discusses the latest books about the brain.
