The best podcasts for writers and readers and curious creatives...

Who am I?

I'm a veteran ghostwriter/collaborator... I'm also a widely under-read novelist... I'm new to Goodpods - hoping to shine a light on my new podcast on what it means to write in someone else's voice, or in service of someone else's story... gotta check out the competition, right?... and there's much to learn from thoughtful readers and insightful writers and curious hosts who know how to ask the right questions and when to pull back and let their guests riff...

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

my podcast, "AS TOLD TO: The Ghostwriting Podcast," explores what it means to live a writing life when most of your writing is on behalf of someone else... speechwriters, joke writers, songwriters, and traditional book doctors and ghostwriters - all have something to say about discovering your own voice as a writer, even if it might seem from the outside looking in that you're mostly helping to give voice to someone else...

What is my podcast playlist about?

I love listening to writers and other creative-types talk about their craft, and their sources of inspiration, and these are some of the shows I turn to most often, hosted by interviewers who are often writers themselves... they don't just care about how the sausage get made - they care about how it's plated and consumed...

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Writer's Bone

Why this podcast?

one of the first author-friendly podcasts - and still one of the best... host Daniel Ford had me on to talk about my novel "A Single Happened Thing" when it came out in 2016, and I've been hooked ever since... in fact, Dan signed on to produce my ghostwriting podcast when we launched in 2021, and it remains a production of the Writer's Bone Podcast Network...

2. Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Why this podcast?

I'm new to this one, but that's okay, because Julia Louis-Dreyfus is new to the podcast game as well... intelligent, insightful conversations with women of a certain age who've made a meaningful difference in their worlds... and, in ours..

3. WTF with Marc Maron Podcast

Why this podcast?

a true original that never gets old... I don't listen to every episode, but when a guest sparks my interest, Maron's show goes to the top of my queue... there's nobody better at teasing out a story from a guest, or capturing his/her essence... his latest episode, with television writer/producer Amy Sherman-Palladino, is a master class on the longform interview that takes host and subject over common ground...

4. Mike Birbiglia's Working It Out

Why this podcast?

this show is always engaging and fun (and funny!)... plus, I love the way Mike and his guests (mostly fellow comics), break down a joke or a bit and invite the listener into the creative process...

5. Imagination & Junk

Why this podcast?

I've known co-host Bill Barol since forever... his previous podcast, "Home: Stories from L.A.," was unlike anything on the podcast dial - storytelling at its finest... here he collaborates with the British variety artist Mat Ricardo to examine what it means to live a creative life and to follow your imagination wherever it might lead... it's beautifully-written and artfully-rendered and deeply personal... highly (highly!) recommended...
