Who am I?

Long time a podcast fan based in the UK. Obsessed with UK true crime especially in places like Scotland and the highlands. I have listened to lots of true crime podcasts such as Serial and content on Audible and BBC Sounds. Always on the hunt for the next viral true crime podcast.

What is my podcast playlist about?

There has been a huge boom in podcasts about true crime in the UK. Stories that are as thrilling and dramatic as fiction! Here is a list of the five best true crime podcasts right now that are a great listen. They all have intriguing storylines, twists that left me wanting to hear more and great interviews.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Impact Podcasts

Why this podcast?

Hunting Mr X is a true crime podcast that reveals the unbelievable story behind the biggest drug importation in Scottish history - and the man who masterminded it all, Julian Chisholm, aka Mr X. In 1990, the former North Sea diver, along with a group of unlikely Scots, made a deal with the Cali Cartel to import £100 million of uncut cocaine into the northwest of Scotland. In this new five-part series, we take you inside Julian Chisholm’s criminal enterprise that spanned the globe. The series also hears from those involved in the huge law enforcement operation to bring him to justice and reveals how Chisholm formed links with one of Europe’s most feared gangsters while in jail before mounting a daring prison escape.

Impact podcasts create narrative investigative podcasts that shine a light on major crimes or scandals in communities covered by DC Thomson brands such as The Courier and The Press and Journal. Impact’s first season, Hunting Mr X, centred on the story of former North Sea oil diver Julian Chisholm who orchestrated a £100m cocaine deal with the Cali cartel. It was shortlisted for best podcast at the UK Society of Editors’ Media Freedom Awards in 2023. Season two - ’Vanished: The Arlene Fraser Murder’ - is also now available. Follow investigative journalist Dale Haslam as he uncovers what really happened in Scotland’s biggest ever missing persons case. In 1998, 33-year-old mum of two Arlene Fraser was at her home one minute - and gone the next. The team involved in Impact includes reporters Dale Haslam and Brendan Duggan, Senior Audio Producer Morven McIntyre, and Special Projects Editor Cheryl Livingstone. A bloody and bitter feud between two of Glasgow's most notorious crime families which has raged for more than two decades, leading to violence and murder. Why the Daniel crime group and the Lyons crime group fell out isn't clear.

The story goes it was linked to the theft of a stash of drugs - or because the Lyons were encroaching on Daniel territory. Whatever the cause, the dispute exploded into a series of astonishingly violent tit for tat attacks which have cast a dark shadow over the city of Glasgow. The most high profile - the very public assassination of Daniel's enforcer Kevin "Gerbil" Carroll. He was shot dead in a hail of bullets in front of terrified shoppers in an Asda car park in 2010.

Delving into Glasgow's gangland past and its history of violent crime, the series hears from former gangsters, ordinary members of the public caught up in this vicious turf war and the police officers fighting to take down the mobsters. Many of those at the heart of the violence are now locked up in prison - or dead. But the fear is that this is a feud which is so ingrained it could go on for generations to come.
