The best podcasts for UK sketch comedy

Who am I?

Hello, I'm Hil. I love to hear and make short sketch podcasts that transport listeners to anywhere in the time/space dustbinuum. Audio is a passion. I was once describing a film I'd watched, costumes and all, when I stopped mid sentence, realising it had been a radio play. In that moment, I realised audio was a powerful medium. This podcast is partly homage to some classic British radio shows but mainly a labour of love.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

We do short, mainly family friendly skits about anything and everything. Play it to your Granny!

What is my podcast playlist about?

A bit of material we've made and some of the classic shows that have inspired and influenced us. We're interested in getting the generation who don't know about podcasts to give it a go.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Your Home May be At Risk

Why this podcast?

A forerunner to Brilcast, this was put together by Hil and Scott Graham, two former Channel 4 "4laughers".

2. Tales Of Old Dartmoor

Why this podcast?

A classic Goon show much listened to and quoted in college days. So many of these old shows contain some timeless lines. For instance: London... open your wallets and repeat after me, "help yourself!"

Hey, Goon Show Lover -- you might also like our new, original, comedy podcast, EXPERTEASE, where fake experts make up fake facts about real topics. It's funny, silly, kinda smart and kinda dumb, with lots of room for improvised nonsense -- rather like the Goon Show! Come on over, and take a gander. Here's the link!

3. GSMC Classics: I´m Sorry, I´ll Read That Again Episode 95 Story Of Radio

Why this podcast?

Not the best sound quality but probably THE show that got me into radio. The team at ISIRTA had us kids in stitches back in the day. We had one album of theirs which was played constantly.

I'm Sorry, I'll Read That Again (often abbreviated as ISIRTA) is a BBC radio comedy programme that originated from the 1964 Cambridge University Footlights revue, Cambridge Circus. This is a scripted sketch show. It had a devoted youth following, with the live tapings enjoying very lively audiences, particularly when familiar themes and characters were repeated; a tradition that continued into the spinoff show I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. The show was a melange of silly voices, awful puns, and mildly smutty humor, in no particular order, with the audience controlling most of the show in later series (no order at all.) If this sounds like Monty Python's Flying Circus, it should. Cleese was a Sorry old time radio cast member. In fact, ISIRTA is notable for the amount of talent that festered within the group. GSMC Classics presents some of the greatest classic radio broadcasts, classic novels, dramas, comedies, mysteries, and theatrical presentations from a bygone era. The GSMC Classics collection is the embodiment of the best of the golden age of radio. Let Golden State Media Concepts take you on a ride through the classic age of radio, with this compiled collection of episodes from a wide variety of old programs. ***PLEASE NOTE*** GSMC Podcast Network presents these shows as historical content and have brought them to you unedited. Remember that times have changed and some shows might not reflect the standards of today’s politically correct society. The shows do not necessarily reflect the views, standards, or beliefs of Golden State Media Concepts or the GSMC Podcast Network. Our goal is to entertain, educate, and give you a glimpse into the past.

4. The mighty boosh radio series mutants

Why this podcast?

Mighty Boosh was just great on the radio. The mixed randomness and pace of the show was a great formula and the characters' voices just kept it bubbling along nicely.

Why this podcast?

We've both had topical material in this delightful show! Newsrevue has been going for years (go see it at Canal Cafe Theatre) and was where I first heard a paying audience laugh at some of my material.
