The best podcasts for UK Comedy

share icon

Share

Who am I?

We're not from the UK. Just lowly members of the former British Empire out in the far flung colonies. We've always found British or UK comedy to be the good stuff, the hard core, uncut, most potent, absurd, and devastating form of comedy anywhere. While comedy from lots of places can be good, it doesn't get better than this. UK comedy brought us together and it shapes and informs our own approach to our important work.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Our show is series of unfair and wildly speculative investigations, critiques and interpretations - exposing the hidden meanings and agendas of overplayed smoooth radio pop songs. Too few people (including the artists themselves) take notice of what's in the lyrics of even the biggest pop songs. There's so much hilariously stupid stuff that's been ignored for far too long and it's a great springboard to explore changing attitudes in society and our own moral compass while being very silly, mock-angry, self-righteous and more. I thought the UK would enjoy us more but the USA and Germany are our largest audiences (and we're thankful for all!)

What is my podcast playlist about?

Each episode tackles a particular song from the Smooth radio playlist, from the 1960s to the 2000s and checks through the lyrics with lengthy research and input from our listeners and internet theorists - to find meaning and wisdom or fault and foolishness.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. RHLSTP with Richard Herring

Why this podcast?

This is a comedian who knows comedians and comedians know him - you'll be able to comb through Richard's lengthy back catalogue to find all your favourite comedians in great interviews, usually recorded live on stage. Our favourite? Episode #30 with Peter Serafinowicz recounting his experience with Terence Stamp on Star Wars.

3. All Killa No Filla

Why this podcast?

One of the first shows I really got into with my missus, probably because we enjoy TV documentaries on true crime but this is the only actual true crime podcast we have enjoyed and the secret is in the filla. Don't be fooled, there's plenty of hilarious filla between these 2 professional comedians as they recount the history of a killa.

Why this podcast?

Another early favourite which needs no introduction. Discover an English gent's warped ideas of eroticism which mixes sex with his thoughts on business organisational structure and regional sales strategy!

Instead, he's decided to read it to the world in this award-winning comedy podcast. With the help of his friends, James Cooper and Alice Levine, Jamie will be reading a chapter each episode and discovering more about his father than he ever bargained for.

5. Isy Suttie's The Things We Do For Love

Why this podcast?

This is my wild-card entry. I only know Isy Suttie as the great comic actor from TV's Peep Show but I'm learning that she's a comedian in her own right and I can't wait to check this out.
