Who am I?

I’m an award-winning investigative journalist who worked for five years at ESPN, covering the gaming industry. Now, I’m the founder of Overcome, a digital media company covering gaming, the creator economy and nerd culture. We produce and I host ‘Visionaries,’ a podcast talking to some of the most powerful people on the Internet. I also write The Jacob Wolf Report newsletter. Over my career, I’ve covered fraud, sexual abuse and millionaires and billionaires in gaming. I’ve interviewed Michael Phelps, Shaquille O’Neal, Mark Cuban, Robert and Jonathan Kraft, Bobby Kotick and more. In 2021, I wrote an investigative story about Joshua Mullins, a multi-time convicted con artist who scammed people for millions, all before his 19th birthday. In 2018, I won the Esports Awards Journalist of the Year award. I’ve also been nominated for Tempest Awards for my TV production work and during my time at ESPN, my department won several awards. I’ve always been eager to learn about the rest of the world, with a specific focus on tech and how it impacts our lives. In the past few years, it’s become increasingly clear how much gaming has an impact on people’s lives. It’s also grown to be the largest form of entertainment. Yet the most powerful people in gaming, the creator economy and nerd culture often aren’t asked hard questions. Much of the press in these industries are enthusiasts, scared of losing access if they ask those questions. I’m not.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Pivot

Why this podcast?

Journalist Kara Swisher and professor Scott Galloway are two of the smartest minds when it comes to technology, but neither are sycophants for one another. They often clash in opinions but their chemistry is really fun and I care as much about them as I do the topics they are discussing. Pivot is great at keeping me up-to-date on what’s happening in the world of tech, with thoughtful discussion and information.

3. The Press Box

Why this podcast?

There's nothing more that journalists like to do than talk about other journalists. I've listened to 'The Press Box' for years and even though I don't know David Shoemaker and Bryan Curtis, I feel like I do. 'The Press Box' is a personal take on what's happening in the media industry — from sports to TV to politics — broken down by two veteran journalists. It's sort of preposterous how on the money these two guys are. Or at least I think that's right.

4. Offline with Jon Favreau

Why this podcast?

I'm not stack ranking here in a particular order, but if I were, 'Offline' might be No. 1. Jon Favreau needs little introduction from his role at Crooked and hosting duties on 'Pod Save America' but 'Offline' is an unique take and flavor of a show. It's a breakdown of what's going on the Internet, from extremism, to crypto, to misinformation. I really love this show and I recommend it to just about everyone trying to learn more about the Internet.

5. Exit Scam

Why this podcast?

I couldn't be an investigative journalist without recommending an investigative podcast! I was enthralled when 'Exit Scam' came out and I still think about the story often. A crypto billionaire has an untimely death on his honeymoon with sparse details and magically, all of his holdings—which, by the way, are customer funds for the most part—are gone? Incredible. Aaron Lammer hosts another favorite of mine, 'Longform,' so I was all about this when it came out. Give it a listen.

In 2018, Gerald Cotten, the founder of Canada's biggest Bitcoin exchange, died under mysterious circumstances during a honeymoon trip to India. His customers were told that the $215 million they'd deposited on the exchange was lost forever — because Gerry had forgotten to leave behind his passwords. But here's the thing: Not everyone believes he's dead. Exit Scam is about what really happened to Gerald Cotten and the fortune that disappeared with him.
