The podcasts I picked and why

1. Kelly Fradin, ADVANCED PARENTING: Advice for Helping Kids Through Diagnoses, Differences, and Mental Health Challenges

Why this podcast?

Dr. Fradin speaks to parents going through really difficult things with their kids in a unique way -- illness, mental health, or other.

Zibby interviews author and pediatrician Dr. Kelly Fradin about her important, empathetic, and comprehensive new guidebook Advanced Parenting: Advice for Helping Kids Through Diagnoses, Differences, and Mental Health Challenges. Dr. Kelly Fradin explains how her mother advocated for her when she had childhood cancer and how she too has had to trust her own parental intuition and advocate for her daughter. She also shares her tips for dealing with difficult diagnoses, building and leaning on support systems, discussing mental health issues without feeling shame, and knowing where to find factual and trustworthy information.

3. Gina Hamadey, I WANT TO THANK YOU: How a Year of Gratitude Can Bring Joy and Meaning in a Disconnected World

Why this podcast?

Gina is a fabulous speaker! Her thoughts on gratitude by simply writing thank-you-notes is refreshing in its impact.

In January 2018, Gina Hamadey Bergman decided to write thank-you notes during her commute instead of checking off other tasks on her to-do list. What resulted from a simple choice was an entire year spent conveying gratitude through handwritten notes as Gina decided to write a thank-you note per day to someone or something new in her life. Reflecting on her childhood and studying her relationships, Gina shows readers all of the joy that defined her year and how they too can begin their own note writing project.

"The most vital things we do — the best antidote to stress — are actually doing things for someone else." Psychiatrist Samantha Boardman, MD, joins Zibby to talk about the patient who inspired her to pursue positive psychology and the lessons she learned on that journey, which culminated in her new book, Everyday Vitality. Samantha shares the easiest ways we can all start reviving our own vitality (hint: we can't do it alone) and tells Zibby about the ways she has applied her practice in her own life, proving positive growth and change are possible for everyone.

5. Melinda Wenner Moyer, HOW TO RAISE KIDS WHO AREN'T ASSHOLES: Science-Based Strategies for Better Parenting — from Tots to Teens

Why this podcast?

Haha. Melinda is funny, smart, and oh-so-knowledgable. Her episode showcases how to be a better parent and raise the kids you might want to spend time with as adults.

"I think making mistakes is a really important part of parenting. It's actually good for our kids when we screw up because it's an opportunity for us to take responsibility." Melinda Wenner Moyer joined Zibby and former podcast guest Christina Hillsberg for a virtual event with the Strand Bookstore to discuss her first book, How to Raise Kids Who Aren't Assholes, and parenting at large. The three talked about why mothers carry so much guilt (as well as how they can start letting some of it go), the different ways anxiety manifests in kids and parents both seeking to do the right thing, and their top tips for raising well-adjusted kids. The three moms also acknowledge that it doesn't take years of research or hundreds of parenting books to be a good parent; all you truly need to do is be a good person.
