The best podcasts for talking about vintage British and USA television

Who am I?

I'm a writer, university technician and podcast maker who loves all kinds of genres, but science fiction is my main interest. I grew up during one of the golden eras of British television, when there was only three (later four) channels and television was one the cornerstones of everyday life. My deeper interest in television programmes, how the were made, and what people thought about them, grew out of Doctor Who fandom, but it's spread across the whole medium.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Very British Futures is a series about UK science fiction related TV dramas. Each episode, invited guests and myself discuss a particular title. Sometimes its a well-known series, other occasions it is an obscurity which maybe only a handful of viewers remember. We celebrate the triumphs and consider how the failures could have been improved.

What is my podcast playlist about?

All these podcasts are about television of yesteryear and today. They all have presenters who are passionate about interesting, quality television across the decades. Some are more light-hearted than others, but all feature articulate interesting people.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour

Why this podcast?

Flat out hilarious. Each episode, hosts Blackout and Dr Velvet charge their glasses with an alcoholic beverage of their choice and take a cheerful, sometime caustic look back at a televisions series. They cover everything from quiz shows to prestige drama. Their colourful commentary is simultaneously funny yet often perceptive. Especially funny are the invented inner lives of quiz show contestants and characters as they watch.
