The best podcasts for rock ‘n roll super-fans!

Who am I?

My name is Scott and I’m one of the hosts of the incredibly popular and groundbreaking Rock-n-Roll Autopsy podcast. Like Phil Hartman’s “Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer”, I’m far too primitive to understand the nuance and complexities of the modern world in which we live... but I’m trying. I’m a voracious podcast listener and have several favorites, but here are a few that I’d like to spotlight for their influence, indulgently obsessive music nerd tendencies, and often cynical Gen X humor.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Each week on Rock-n-Roll Autopsy we use five proprietary and scientifically proven categories—gratuitous boomer-ism, excessive misogyny, wanton whiteness, malignant machismo, and culture vulturism—to examine a suspect song and determine if it is responsible for the death of rock ‘n roll. We are amateur pathologists. Do not try this at home.

What is my podcast playlist about?

As a self-confessed, budding, wanna-be rock ‘n roll podcaster, this list represents a small sample of shows that I believe are operating at peak podcast proficiency and keep me inspired to continue cranking out the content!

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Songs That Don't Suck

Why this podcast?

Songs That Don’t Suck: Mark is a great guy and doing God’s work—scouring the globe for good, new music. I’m especially fond of his opening monologue segment, where Mark frequently flexes some serious music nerd muscle.

Andy Jones, Nick Jones and Chris Lathrop command you to kneel before whatever you use to listen to rock music podcasts and soak up the banter!
Since 2013, this trio of KISS fans representing multiple generations analyzed every song from the band’s catalog, selected randomly from their 1974 debut through their most recent release, Monster. Now, they’re taking on songs by any band from any rock music genre, submitted by the show’s listeners.
So hear their words and take heed as they slowly rob you of your virgin soul! Who knows – Pod of Thunder might just become your favorite rock and roll podcast (if it hasn’t already)!

3. History in Five Songs with Martin Popoff

Why this podcast?

History in Five Songs: Martin Popoff is the wisest of wise music swamis! I listen every week. Always informative, obsessively researched, and thought-provoking content. (Hey Pantheon, when you scooping up Rock-n-Roll Autopsy?)

History in Five Songs with Martin Popoff is the show that aims to make grand and often oddball hard rock and heavy metal points through a narrative built upon the tiny idea of a quintet of songs. Buttressed with illustrative clips, Martin argues quickly and succinctly why these songs - and the specific sections of these tracks - support his mad professor premise, from the wobbly invention of an “American” heavy metal, to the influence of Led Zeppelin in hair metal or to more succinct topics like tapping and twin leads. The songs serve as bricks, but Martin slathers plenty of mortar. At the end, hopefully he has a sturdy house in which this week’s theory can reside unbothered by the elements. At approximately 7000, Martin has had published in books more record reviews than anybody in the history of music writing across all genres. Additionally, Martin has penned approximately 85 books on hard rock, heavy metal, classic rock and record collecting. Proud part of Pantheon - the podcast network for music lovers.
