The best podcasts for Pop Culture/Nostalgia

Who am I?

We are a husband and wife team that have a podcast about nostalgia. We are children of the 1980s and we love going back to revisit that decade as well as the 90s. The music, fads, television and movies all bring back good memories Listening to old music, telling stories from childhood, seeing movies that may not be as good now as they were then, all of those things make us long for our childhood. There was an innocence then that is lost on us now. Television shows like The Goldbergs, The Americans and Stranger Things brought the 1980s back to the forefront and we love to talk about. As Bruce Springsteen sang in Glory Day, when I get older I hope and I don’t sit around talking about it, but I probably will. Or as Eddie Money sang, I wanna go back and do it all over, but I can’t go back I know. We do go back. Back to that time of our childhood and discuss all of the fuzzy memories that we have.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Our podcast is about our experiences growing up in the 1980s. We talk about things that were important to us as children, and what we look back on fondly as adults. We discuss our experiences with music, tv, family, movies, and icons of the 80s. We also invite our listeners to join in on the fun by suggesting episode topics. We love to engage with anyone who has memories from the past.

What is my podcast playlist about?

I am picking these particular podcasts because they do a good job of capturing the feelings of nostalgia. Each podcast covers some of the same material, but all in different ways.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Pop Culture Yearbook

Why this podcast?

This is a podcast that picks pieces of Pop Culture in a given year and discuss it. Brad, Pete and Giff are lifelong friends who do an incredible job of describing what certain movies, tv shows, music artists, albums, etc mean to them. They are unique in that they pick a given year to discuss and usually discuss that year for a month at a time. They typically have an episode each on a movie, television, and music. Another unique thing about them is after discussion, they have a topic that they will make a draft list of each of their favorite in that topic. An example might be “favorite Steve Martin films”. Each host takes a turn at drafting their top 5, assuming another has not already picked that object. Often hilarity ensues during this portion. They stand out because they are not just about one decade, but cover 4-5 decades. The chemistry between the 3 hosts is evident. This is a can’t miss show for me

4. Surely You Can't Be Serious Podcast

Why this podcast?

Dee and Jason are great hosts. Smart, talented and funny. These guys grew up in the late 70s and the 80s just like me. They cover all of the topics. They know their stuff. They bring back those nostalgic feelings every time I listen to them. What separates them from the rest? To be honest, a lot of things. 1. They do more research than anyone else. But they don’t give it to you in a factual way. They tell stories using the information that they get and it is truly a wonderful listen. 2. They know their stuff. Even before the research, you can tell they know what they’re talking about. It is evident when one does the research and the other can guess as to what the subject is. 3. They have actually covered some stuff from the 70s. That is different than the other podcasts listed as those are mostly 80s and beyond. Jason and Dee cover mostly the 80s and 90s, but every now and then they go into the way back machine and bring up some really fuzzy memories for me that I enjoy. 4. They will debate each other one which movie, album, etc is the best. They do a compare and contrast and they don’t make you feel like you’re back in a high school English class This is a can’t miss podcast for me
