Who am I?
I've worked in various forms of media production (Radio, TV, Newspaper) for 24 years, and 5 of those years were in the podcast industry. I had the honor of serving as a judge for the 2023 Ambies Awards and am a proud member of The Podcast Academy, which operates the ceremony annually. My passion for creating quality content spans wide and runs deep. As a podcaster myself I've had a hand and an ear in every aspect of the production process. The Poet God podcast which I've produced for the last 5 years is the pride and joy that reflects the level of quality in podcasting that I stand for. As a fan of podcasts in general I listen to many and I'm excited to present my recommendations for your listening pleasure. As I mentioned I'm a massive fan of podcasts in general. Some of my favorites are the ones that help us be better human beings whether that's through helping us with mental health issues or hearing different perspectives on navigating relationship challenges. Creating a safe space to explore delicate topics is very important to me as a podcast producer and a listener. We don't all have the luxury of having supportive, or empathic people in our lives to help us unpack and navigate the issues we face that trouble us the most. If we can provide a sense of community that helps listeners do any of that I think that's a wonderful thing.
My Show
What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?
I hope the content in this playlist collectively helps the community it was created for feel loved, heard, and worthy because they are. Below is a description of my pride and joy and my contribution to the greater calling podcasts can live up to when created with care for the listener and respect for the art of podcasting itself. "Using The Poet God podcast as a vehicle, poet and spiritual seeker Akil Johnson takes us on a journey of self-reflection and spiritual inquiry, inviting us to question our purpose in life and the value of the sacrifices we've made. Through episodes like “Coming Out As Human”, “Busy Bedrooms”, “Sometimes A Lie”, and “Sexually Speaking”, Akil invites us to explore our upbringings, our relationships, and our understanding of love and faith. Whether we're looking for answers or just trying to make sense of it all. He dives deep into his heart in poems like “Hopes Die”, “Was It Enough?”, and “Location Unknown” to provide an honest and inspiring look into the struggles and rewards of life. With a community of down-to-earth, thoughtful, and often humorous people Akil has assembled called “The Board”, this podcast provides a voice that invites us to confront our doubts and anxieties to find the answers we seek on our own paths to spiritual growth and fulfillment. If you’ve been looking for a community that listens respectfully, explores objectively, creates with integrity, and maintains a safe space for individuality and vulnerability, well come home!"
What is my podcast playlist about?
I choose an assortment of podcasts/episodes that not only serve to provide guidance on different topics that speak to experiences of love, sexual interests, or relationship challenges, but ones that do so with depth, and authenticity. As I said earlier providing a sense of community where listeners feel loved, heard, and respected is important for every listener including and especially our brothers and sisters of color in the LGBTQ communities.

THE POET GOD

Were we crippled from the start, fed with poison from the parts, our community that only embraces a narrow view of humanity, though be it far from their own reality? Were we nurtured on the nipple of insanity?
Join us as we take a tantalizing journey deep into the dark, forbidden world of how our upbringing has shaped our sexual views, gender roles, and relationship patterns. In this and the upcoming episodes of this series, we will explore the dangerous dance between nature and nurture, and unveil the provocative teachings and messages about love and intimacy that we were exposed to and influenced by. Through intoxicating storytelling and passionate discussions, we'll navigate the twisted and captivating path of healing from past traumas as we seek to answer why so many people hide parts of themselves from the people they love the most while sharing those hidden parts with those who are like ghosts. And how we have emerged out of a culture of hiding, a culture of fear, a culture that provided a corrupt kind of care, and now we’re here, beyond the ripples of the toxic nipples!
