Who am I?

I'm an indie theatre and film writer and producer turned podcaster. I love the 80s television, movies and music. I think it's important to look back in order to leap forward. My company, 134 West, develops new works and diverse voices for theatre, film, music and TV. Also, I like puppies and cookies. I've studied television and film and am an independent creator across theatre, TV and film. I was curious about the portrayal of women in 1980s television because it so informed who I became. There is a considerable nostalgia now for the 80s (and 90s), so it's super fun to look back. But it's also valuable figuring out where we "started". We are still re-examining what representation means for women+ and people of color, so I think it's important to celebrate women and examine how we got here.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

80s TV Ladies looks back at female-driven television shows from the 1980s from a modern, feminist perspective. We're curious about history, storytelling, and representation in pop culture. Creating this podcast felt like a way to have an essential conversation in an entertaining context.

What is my podcast playlist about?

I think we sometimes forget about women or gloss over their ground-breaking accomplishments. And I think it's often more challenging for women to be heard -especially in our love of pop culture. And for women of color, it's even harder to be genuinely heard. I love listening to women explore the movies, TV and music that they love and talk about the cultural touchstones that shape us all.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Girl, That's Scary

Why this podcast?

I just discovered this, my new favorite movie podcast. Jazz and Kat are hilarious and on-the-money hosts. I can't watch most horror movies anymore cause I'm a big giant baby, but I can enjoy this podcast because these ladies have great recaps, sneak in thoughtful insight, and offer vital tips for surviving a zombie apocalypse!

2. You Must Remember This

Why this podcast?

Karina is the kind of podcaster I wish I could be. You Must Remember This is about the secret and/or forgotten history of Hollywood's first century. Her shows are so informative and personal, insightful and delightful. I love the themes to her seasons - from Star Wars to Dead Blondes to Erotic 80s - every show is so well written and produced it makes me want to listen again while re-watching every movie.

You Must Remember This is a storytelling podcast exploring the secret and/or forgotten histories of Hollywood’s first century. It’s the brainchild and passion project of Karina Longworth (founder of Cinematical.com, former film critic for LA Weekly), who writes, narrates, records and edits each episode. It is a heavily-researched work of creative nonfiction: navigating through conflicting reports, mythology, and institutionalized spin, Karina tries to sort out what really happened behind the films, stars and scandals of the 20th century.

Finally, a podcast that studies, analyzes and celebrates women in TV. Thousands of comedies, variety shows and dramas have aired, yet the presence of strong women – both in front of and behind the camera - is an experience we need to understand better and embrace. With an eye to aligning the leadership lesson, time capsule observation or fascinating backstory of a show’s success or failure, my goal of Advanced TV Herstory is to connect the treasures of the past to the great potential of today’s TV and online platforms. Tomorrow’s success is rooted in understanding what has come before us. So gear up for a little sociology, economics, strategy, storytelling and fun.

5. Office Ladies

Why this podcast?

I know it's not a truly indie podcast, but I love it. In some ways, it may be the ladies-driven pop culture podcast that ruled them all. Office Ladies basically created and made popular the "let's get the stars of the show to walk us through each episode of a popular show" genre. The reason is, they're great at it. Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey genuinely seem to love doing this podcast - and they really give you info on The Office - which may well indeed be a show that people can look back on 40 years later and say, hey, that show defined its time. So their podcast is really part of the archive of the show now.
