The best podcasts for learning the story behind the story!

Who am I?

I'm the co-founder of Dear White Women LLC, which is a platform designed to help White women use their privilege to uproot systemic racism without centering themselves in the process. One part of this is our podcast, where, among other things, we're always asking the question "why?" to find out not only why things are the way they are, but what's the true underlying reason(s) behind decisions, history, life events, and more that get us to where we are today. Being a litigator and a curious human, I'm a big fan of the question "why" and finding out the "story behind the story" which I find often to be more interesting than the story itself! See above, but the more details I can find out about why something is the way it is, I find that we learn how NOT to repeat certain mistakes - but also to understand that there are many reasons why something is the way it is, and those may not be obvious ones. I think the more that we stay curious, the more that we can learn to create a world that works for all - not just some - of us.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Dear White Women explores questions of identity, belonging, history, law, and inclusion through the lens of an anti-racism journey. As I mentioned above, we break down the story behind the story to get more White people to listen, learn and then ACT to make a change for our next generations. I'm always therefore drawn to podcasts who do the same - be it in investigative journalism, history, wellness, or more.

What is my podcast playlist about?

See above! But this is really a mix of so many genres - education, crime, and a lot of humor - that I find to be very persuasive when it comes to learning more about specific topics. It's so important to keep asking why, and to keep having conversations with people who may challenge or question our beliefs. These podcasts are some of the best that I've heard in this area!

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Behind the Bastards

Why this podcast?

This was recommended to me by a dear friend and wow, is this the story behind the story! It takes historical figures - who are terrible, to be clear - and gives you some of the reasons why they became as terrible as they did, all while making you laugh (which sounds counterintuitive, I know, but seriously, it's the best). A must listen - especially when they have multi part episodes.

There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.

2. Something Was Wrong

Why this podcast?

This is the story behind the story of cases of gaslighting, violence, and more in intimate relationships or friendships - when you think you know what's going on, you realize you have no idea what lives people may be living in private. The host is really wonderful in creating a safe space for her interviewees.

3. In the Bubble with Andy Slavitt

Why this podcast?

Every time I listen to this podcast, I learn something - and it's not always the thing I was expecting to learn. Andy Slavitt has the guests that often have the deep insight into their own fields of speciality so that they can provide the backstory - and sometimes counternarrative - to what the media is telling us. I always look forward to new episodes!

4. You're Wrong About

Why this podcast?

I mean, if you don't love the title, then we can't be friends. Kidding - kind of. "You're Wrong About" is amazing in that it takes deep dives into so many things that we have taken for granted - but that we may be very wrong about as we don't often know, or understand, the back story. This is another one of those podcasts where I learn something every time!

5. Buried Bones - a historical true crime podcast with Kate Winkler Dawson and Paul Holes

Why this podcast?

I listen to a lot of true crime, but this podcast stands out because it takes a historical crime and looks at all the facts, through careful analysis, to tell a specific crime story. I love listening to the hosts debate through their different lens (professor and writer, providing the theoretical side, with the former crime scene analyst, who provides the practical viewpoint and experience) - and I also love how it highlights how what lens you have can clearly impact your version of events.

On Buried Bones, journalist Kate Winkler Dawson and retired investigator Paul Holes dissect some of history’s most compelling true crime cases from centuries ago. Together, they explore these very old cases through a 21st century lens. With their years of expertise and knowledge of modern forensics, they reflect on how far science has come and bring new insight to old mysteries. Together, Kate and Paul have examined many cases including the 1932 Lindbergh baby kidnapping, the first time fingerprinting was used as evidence in a courtroom and a possible serial killer in 1960s Nashville. They ask, was the right person convicted or was someone wrongfully accused? See pictures, diagrams and evidence from each case on Instagram @buriedbonespod.
