The best podcasts for learning more about economics (it's more fun than you think)!

Who am I?

I am the host of Clotheshorse, the podcast that loves clothes but hates capitalism. And guess what? I am obsessed wth economics (also: fake fruit, cats, Korean food, and vintage cookbooks). Yes, I was the kid that read the encyclopedia for fun, but learning more about economic systems and the factors sort of steering our economy has helped me understand fast fashion and its impacts a lot more. It's also helped me make sense of why the things that happen around me are happening. My podcast Clotheshorse is ostensibly about fashion and its impacts on the planet and its people. But it's also about WHY we shop so much and HOW the fast fashion model succeeds in a time when so many of us are struggling. To understand the model of fast fashion (and how it spread like wildfire, taking over every major retailer), you have to learn more about economics and the flaws within our economy/late stage capitalism. I know it sounds boring, but economics are fascinating and more about human behavior than anything else! A good economics podcast draws you in with personal stories and shared experiences. I come from a low income background, so understanding the systems that have framed my life (and sometimes held me back or kept me awake at night) has actually helped me grow as an activist and a person who talks to people about big issues!

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Clotheshorse began as a podcast on a mission to pull back the curtain of glamour and mystery that obscures the real truths about the clothing we buy. After all, clothing is a basic need. It keeps us warm and protects us from the sun. Yet it can be an addiction, and certainly a way we show the world exactly who we dream of being. Shopping is both a hobby and a social activity, so it’s no wonder that the average American buys a new piece of clothing every 5.5 days! We spend so much money looking at clothes, buying clothes, and talking about clothes. Do we know the true price of our clothes? Who makes them? How are they made? The answers to these questions contain some very dark truths and many extremely toxic practices. Clotheshorse explores them all. Over time, Clotheshorse has evolved into an exploration of life in late state capitalism, from our experiences as workers to our relationship with consumerism.

What is my podcast playlist about?

ECONOMICS! I promise that economics are super soapy, super fascinating, and really more about human behavior (good and bad) than spreadsheets or arithmetic.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. The Uncertain Hour

Why this podcast?

One of my all-time favorites. The Uncertain Hour focuses on exploring the policies and histories that have made the economic playing field extremely un-level. All of the stories feel so personal, you almost can't believe that this podcast is about economic policy. It's incredible!

Each season, we explain the weird, complicated and often unequal American economy — and why some people get ahead and some get left behind. Host Krissy Clark dives into obscure policies and forgotten histories to explain why America is like it is.

The latest season examines the “welfare-to-work industrial complex” and the multi-million dollar companies running today’s for-profit welfare centers.

2. Planet Money

Why this podcast?

If you told me ten years ago that I would be REALLY into a podcast called "Planet Money,"I would have laughed at you. Like who am I, some kind of finance bro? But this podcast breaks down the way our economy plays out in so many different facets of our day-to-day life. It never ceases to surprise me! I always feel smarter when I finish an episode!

3. The Dream

Why this podcast?

The Dream is about MLMs...but it's also about the economic and social conditions that make many women fall prey to their promises. It teaches us a lot about our desire to find community, the pressure to "have it all," and the challenges many women face when trying to make a living and raise a family.

4. The Dollop with Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds

Why this podcast?

Specifically the Ronald Reagan episodes!! Yeah, this is a comedy podcast but guess what? Economics and history can be fun! And most of the economic realities we deal with NOW began in during the Reagan administration, thanks to his desire to deregulate so many different things in order to promote business growth. For example, removing regulations around advertising to children allowed the toy industry to literally create cartoons that were solely 30 minute commercials for toys! To understand why Reagan was so anti-tax and pro-deregulation, you have to understand his back story. The Dollop episodes are educational and entertaining.

5. Decoder Ring

Why this podcast?

My husband and I talk about the 2022 episode "The Mall Is Dead (Long Live the Mall)" at least once a week. Why? Because the creation (and then decline) of the mall reflects different periods in our economic and social history. Super fascinating for anyone who used to obsess over Mall Madness and gets a little misty eyed thinking about dead malls!
