The best podcasts for learning about why I do what I do

Who am I?

Sure, my podcast is about books, but I'm driven by all of the arts: music, film, visual arts, comics... you name it. I'm a strong believer that we can connect through the arts, build communities, whatever our backgrounds. I've taught college-level English and humanities courses for more than twenty years, worked in radio and small-press publishing, and published a book on popular culture in the 1990s. I'm equally enthralled by broadly popular entertainment and the oddball fringes of our culture. All part of one big continuum. Books (& music, & comics, etc.) were my solace from before I can remember, so it's hard to pinpoint a moment when my interest was piqued. But expertise? That I can do. BA in English from San Jose State University. MA in Composition & Rhetoric from University of Nevada, Reno. PhD in American Literature & Culture from UNR. 20+ years of teaching compostion, literature, humanities. Six years working for radio station KSJS, including on the literary arts program. Three years as co-creator & editor-in-chief of small press lit mag CRiME CLUb. Author of The 1990s (Popular Culture Through History). Etc. Etc. Etc.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

A Book & Its Author is pretty straightforward in its conception. I interview an author about a specific book of theirs and they read from said book. As focused as a podcast on books may seem, it can really be on any topic, depending on the subject of the book in question. This show was largely born out of my previous podcast, The Bucket Of Blah Blah, which was cut down due to the pandemic. Both shows were driven by a personal passion for having conversations with different kinds of people, for learning about new things and novel experiences. Each of the shows in this list does that, albeit in decidedly different ways. They tell stories that give insights not only into the subject matter covered, but also into the personalities of the podcast creators.

What is my podcast playlist about?

I try to listen to a great variety of podcasts with the admittedly limited time that I have. These represent some of the ones that I keep coming back to because I always feel like my consciousness has been expanded a bit after listening. Some of them were among the inspirations to start my own podcast.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. The Wind

Why this podcast?

My current favorite podcast. So well produced. Such thoughtful deep dives into an interesting array of subjects. Fil Corbitt puts their all into this show, and their passion and commitment to telling important stories is apparent. My favorite episode is the one about Reno's whip laws, with the one about Western movie music being a close second. Corbitt's previous podcast, Van Sounds, is also recommended, though The Wind really takes what they were doing with VS to the next level.

2. Stuff You Should Know

Why this podcast?

Arguably the main inspiration for starting my own show. Love the wide-ranging topics, love the fact that hosts Josh & Chuck don't pretend to be experts. We get to join them in the discovery process and the podcast consequently serves as a kind of love-letter to boundless curiosity.

3. Fun Ideas Podcast

Why this podcast?

I've invited Mark Arnold to be on my own podcast several times because he has such wide knowledge in such fun stuff: cartoons, music, comics, etc. His podcast, featuring interviews with people working in these and related realms, builds and expands upon this expertise. Arnold is a skillful, thoughtful interviewer, and he and his guests frequently seem to be having a great time.

4. Lore

Why this podcast?

We all know Lore, right? A gold standard in strange storytelling. Aaron Mahnke delivers these tales in a gentle, soothing voice that lures us into dark corners. Sneaky of him, huh? Not an obvious influence on AB&IA, but certainly contributed to my wanting to get into this podcast game.

5. LeVar Burton Reads

Why this podcast?

And speaking of voices: LeVar Burton's reading voice is superb and with his acting background he brings these short stories to life. I was too old for Reading Rainbow, so no nostalgia here. I just think Burton's story selection is wonderful and the great love he has for these tales is evident in every utterance, every bit of commentary. This has featured some favorite authors and has introduced me to new ones. And it cemented my decision that my show couldn't just be an interview show, that there had to be readings from the books in order to really give listeners a taste of their character.
