The best podcasts for inspiration to start a podcast

Who am I?

My name is Gustav ''Zeventine'' Elfström. I'm from Stockholm, Sweden and I host the pop culture podcast Art is Alive where I interview notable people in entertainment. It started in 2018 as I took a course in podcasting (which I later failed), and me never giving up, I decided to start a new podcast of my own. I called my friend Beatrice Reiman who is an influencer in Sweden and made a pilot episode together with her. I felt proud of how the episode turned out and thought that it was too good not to share, so I did. Art is Alive got successful quickly and gained support from Spotify and Paramount (Nickelodeon, MTV) in Sweden so I kept going by emailing guests for the show and making more episodes. Now, years later, I'm still going and I get more and more proud of it as time goes by. I chose to share the podcasts that inspire me because there's a story behind every single one I picked. What I like about listening to podcasts is that no matter what I'm going through in life, podcasts have always had a special place in my heart because it was a way of me escaping to a place where I would feel better mentally. After having solved whatever issues that have been brining me down, coming back to re-listen to those episodes makes me feel proud of how far I've grown as a person and that I survived every instance of it. I hope these podcasts can inspire others to feel the same.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Art is Alive is a show where I interview celebrities and other public figures in music and acting about their lives, careers and projects. The goal of the show is to inspire people to believe in their dreams, whether it's in acting, music, podcasting or anything else, one can always achieve their goals by working hard and never giving up. I've had the pleasure of collaborating with Paramount and their brands Nickelodeon and MTV for my episodes, interviewing cast members of their shows, like the iCarly reboot, but also reaching out to people myself that I'm a fan of about interviewing them. Of course there have been lots of instances where I've been denied but giving up was never an option for me. Because of that mindset, I'm sharing podcasts and episodes I'm inspired by for my show and how they inspired me to keep going about my Art is Alive project.

What is my podcast playlist about?

I've compiled a list of episodes that inspire my podcast Art is Alive. This playlist consists of episodes from shows I listen to on a daily basis that help me grow as a podcaster myself. The goal of sharing these is the thought of maybe somebody reading this will get as inspired as I am to start making art themselves, because podcasting is an art form as well.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Hard Feelings with Jennette McCurdy

Why this podcast?

Hard Feelings is a podcast by former actress turned author Jennette McCurdy. She talks about her life and the way she feels about things, like style, mental health and social media and how those things affect her, either positively or negatively. To me, listening to her episodes, that are about 10-15 minute long, keeps me grounded and I can relate to a lot of what she's saying; like feeling pressured to look a certain way or behaving in a way that just isn't authentic to oneself. That made me feel a lot better about myself in a sense that I know that I'm not alone, and whether or not you're famous, anyone can feel this way. She gives a lot of advice to her fans about surviving whatever issue is going on in life, which to me feels very genuine and admirable.

Jennette McCurdy doesn't give a f*ck. Except that she does. She gives many f*cks. So many, in fact, that she hurts constantly. "This is what it means to be human," Jennette said in an exclusive quote for this podcast description. She said it with her chin in her palm, taking herself seriously.

2. AI Suit, Rats, Glimmers

Why this podcast?

Sarah Silverman is one of my favorite comedians. She gets very honest with people about what she feels about the world and issues going on. In this very episode, I make an appearance calling into the show and ask Sarah if she's got any good advice recently. Me being very passionate about topics like mental health, I felt Sarah would be a good person to ask this question. She answers me and talks about what her shrink recently had told her about letting go of one's ego, which I think is very courageous to talk about openly.

3. Beach Too Sandy, Water Too Wet

Why this podcast?

This is a podcast I discovered during the pandemic when I felt I needed a little laughter in life. Two siblings are reviewing reviews of ordinary places, like restaurants and other businesses, on Yelp and criticize it because of how poor the reviews are written or how ridiculous they are. When I did an episode of my podcast Art is Alive with JJ Ramberg, co-founder of Goodpods, we talked about this show and how funny I think it is. It's definitely something I think everybody should hear.

4. Episode 150 - Jayne Mansfield

Why this podcast?

Hollywood Crime Scene is a true crime/comedy mixed podcast starring Rachel Fisher and Desi Jedeikin. In every episode they discuss a notable scandal in Hollywood history. Me being a huge fan of blonde bomb shell Jayne Mansfield, I discovered their podcast because of that episode. They talk about her career and life and the ups and downs about it, giving details about her I never even knew.

5. 55: We Have the Same 24 Hours (Exclusive Interview with Angelique Bates)

Why this podcast?

Ever wondered what life was like for a 90s child star? On Art is Alive I had the chance of interviewing actress Angelique Bates, known for All That on Nickelodeon for which she was an original cast member. We talked about her first modeling gig at only a few months old and how a career in showbiz started so early led her star on All That. She gives insight onto the behind the scenes moments of All That's set on Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando Florida, like hanging out with the R&B icon Aaliyah on set of the show to me telling her that her podcast The Evening Showdown led me to start Art is Alive. It's a full circle moment.

Angelique Bates broke through at twelve years old in America when she got the gig as an original cast member on the hit children's show All That. As a grown up, she's starred in productions like Strong Medicine, Boston Public and she can be seen in the posthumous Michael Jackson video for the song Love Never Felt So Good ft. Justin Timberlake. In this exclusive interview, Bates talks to Zeventine about growing up in front of the cameras and what the entertainment industry was like for her.
