The best podcasts for history-ish topics

Who am I?

Pop culture fanatic, occasional binge watcher, and out and about Queens Mom by way of Pakistan. Have a myriad of weird interests so everything amuses me! Recently I am on a history trip because DUH my latest podcast is Undiscarded: Stories of New York with the City Reliquary Museum - a place that is really a repository for documenting everyday history in the city as it rapidly changes. Like the museum itself, I can't claim to be an academic expert in the topic, but I am always deduced by a good yarn, what makes a city tick and how everything that's happened influences what WILL happen. I have lived in a variety of places Pakistan (where I am from), Saudi Arabia, Canada and finally ended up in NYC. Being in so many places has made me adaptable and part of that is being a sponge and soaking up all the stories that make up a new place.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Undiscarded features the unique and often mundane objects in the Museum's collection and uncovers the hidden or forgotten history behind them. It is not so much a show about facts and chronological order, but more about a feeling in a time and how it was to be in it, culturally. I also have an affinity for interesting people who are not experts in a traditional way. That's why the show's I've picked are ones that appeal to my curiosity, and myriad of interests- kind of like the displays at the Reliquary.

What is my podcast playlist about?

The shows I selected are ones that discuss history but not in a direct way, it goes about it by unfolding a story about a unique person/situation/theory and unfolding the cultural story behind it. Or it teaches me history but not in a direct way - it's more about the scenario and the people involved.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Undiscarded: Stories of New York

Why this podcast?

Well it's my show of course, but also I love how the episodes meander through various topics and themes based on a sole object - Like a burned-out light bulb from the Statue of Liberty is really about meditation and devotion to a city icon. Or an old rollerskate tells the story of the birth of roller disco and the significance of skating to the civil rights movement. Sure we touch on where the object is from and it's origins but we go in some unexpected places.

A ticket stub, a bottle cap, a piece of fabric, a plastic souvenir, a lightbulb... these simple things hold power – they capture moments in time and the stories of people’s lives. Undiscarded: Stories of New York is a new podcast series that celebrates the extraordinary history behind seemingly mundane objects, telling absorbing and absolutely unique stories that shed new light on the people whose lives have always made New York so alive, exciting, and gloriously messy.

3. Business Wars

Why this podcast?

Okay don't laugh - that is why I said "History-ish" Yes it's business, yes it's corporations battling it out with a lot of official jargon but really these seasons capture so much more than just the battle to stay on top. Changing trends in the country, the economy-driven men battling it out and cutting deals to stay on top, it could be the tale of any old war from the olden times!

Netflix vs. HBO. Nike vs. Adidas. Business is war. Sometimes the prize is your wallet or your attention. Sometimes, it’s just the fun of beating the other guy. The outcome of these battles shapes what we buy and how we live.

4. Sidedoor

Why this podcast?

As far as I am concerned this is the holy grail or artifact podcasts, this really shows the connectedness in our cultural institutions - where else can you get the confluences of biologists, archivists, and anthropologists other than the Smithsonian? Beautiful work!

Brooklyn Public Library is full of stories. Borrowed brings the very best of them to you.

Borrowed is a narrative series about superhero librarians, neighborhood stories and what it means to be a free, democratic place in today’s changing world. We tell stories about libraries during natural disasters, the challenges of homelessness, and NYC’s fraught relationship with trash.

Borrowed and Banned is our limited series about America's ideological war with its bookshelves. From September to December 2023, we released ten episodes featuring the stories of students on the frontlines, librarians and teachers whose livelihoods are endangered when they speak up, and writers whose books have become political battleground.
