The best podcasts for history and culture, with a touch of Irishness

Who am I?

We are Enda and Maria, a Hiberno-Irish duo based in Madrid, Spain. We have spent the best part of a decade - through books, our podcast, literary events, and street tours - celebrating the wonderful things Ireland and Spain have in common. Our podcast explores all of that and more, as we talk about photography, Egypt, art, cinema, and special locations around the world. We have one eye on Madrid and Spain, and another on the rest of the world. Our podcast really loves culture, and our passion really shines through as we discuss visiting museums, interesting documentaries, literature events and so much more. The simple fact is that we would be discussing these topics anyway, even if we didn't have a microphone in front of us. And aside from our chats, we often interview interesting people, such as actors, singers, and journalists. They share their deep knowledge with us and our audience. We feel that our podcast playlist also features these elements.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

We are both published authors, editors, translators and content creators. Given the nature of our work, we often organize book launches, photographic exhibitions and Q&A sessions. Our writing is typically focused on historical and cultural topics, and since we write about a wide range of subjects, a podcast which allows us to investigate and discuss many different things seemed like a natural fit for us. Furthermore, we have a lot of friends and contacts who are doing fine work in the cultural sphere, and they frequently invite us to their events. With that in mind, we have access to fascinating people and their rich ideas, which makes for interesting content!

What is my podcast playlist about?

Our podcast playlist features passionate podcasters who mix history and culture, though not exclusively. This playlist celebrates openness of ideas and topics, as well as the host's ability to underpin all of this knowledge with charm and humour. The playlist is designed for people who want to learn while enjoying good-natured conversation. Facts peppered with jokes, that's the aim, and all the podcasters in this list do this brilliantly.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Not What You Thought You Knew

Why this podcast?

We love this podcast because it is very similar to the idea of our first book. Essentially, what the show does (brilliantly) is take a look at lesser-known stories and examines with experts. You come away from the podcast learning something new, and it is all backed up by different perspectives. It's very well done.

3. Documentary on One Podcast

Why this podcast?

Coming from the Irish state broadcaster, this podcast does not have a regular host, nor can it be described as irreverent. But it definitely belongs on this list, as many of the stories are as engaging as they are surprising, and the humour, and is often the case, is found in the strangeness of real life. Excellently researched and produced, the breadth of topics will keep you coming back for more.

4. Stuff You Missed in History Class

Why this podcast?

What we love about this podcast is that the co-hosts have such a brilliant dynamic, and their friendship is definitely one of the strongest parts of the podcast. But the real joy is the fact that they are so dedicated to bringing unknown stories back into the light, taking them from the dustbin of history and giving them the attention they deserve.

This podcast talks about Ireland, has a dynamic duo, has a dynamic duo with the smarts and the banter ... need we say more? This mix of journalism and academia results in a show that is enlightening and accessible. What's more, it frequently focuses on current affairs.
