The best podcasts for Fighting the Patriarchy

Who am I?

I'm an artist. Sometimes theatre, sometimes literary, sometimes other. I've been a writer, actor, director, playwright, singer, songwriter, puppeteer, clown and more. I also make podcasts! I've been a feminist for as long as I've known there was such a thing. I was raised by feminists and I played my Free to Be You and Me record constantly. I'd hoped we'd have toppled the patriarchy by now but it sure seems to be getting worse. I used to think we could make changes in small ways, shift the landscape bit by bit but that seems less and less likely in this one step forward two steps back moment. We need allies and we need companions on this road. We are really still the minority and we need all the support we can get. I feel very much less alone when I listen to the voices of other women in the fight.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

The confirmation hearings of Brett Kavanagh filled me with so much rage, I felt as though I'd become a dragon and wrote a blog post called "I Am a Dragon Now, The Fear of Men Is My Food" (which you can hear me read on my other podcast, Songs for the Struggling Artist). This blog post went a bit viral and eventually it turned itself into a fictional world where many women became dragons. The Dragoning explores what a world turned upside down might look like, a world where men might be eaten or set on fire when they get a little too patriarchal. It offers a world where we can imagine what it feels like to be powerful

What is my podcast playlist about?

These podcasts are what help keep my feminist boat afloat. They're not all explicitly feminist but they're all in the game.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. The Guilty Feminist

Why this podcast?

I've been listening from the very beginning, when there were very few feminist offerings to be had in the podcast space. The show manages to talk about very sticky issues while being hilarious at the same time. If you want to be in the loop of feminist comedians, this is the place.

2. The Broad Experience

Why this podcast?

While I don't think the show ever explicitly hopes to fight the patriarchy, it does offer a lot of perspective on the issues women face at work. It gave me some tools for dealing with the patriarchy as it is - which is kind of important in the meantime. One thing I know I took from this show was to take the dates off of my resume/CV as a way to fight against ageism.

3. Lady Killers with Lucy Worsley

Why this podcast?

These historical murderesses really took their fight to the next level. Some of them are quite unsavory but I appreciate Lucy Worsely's interest in examining the cultural conditions that led them down those unsavory roads. Sometimes, when I feel like burning it all down, it helps to listen to a show about women who did.

4. Body Stuff with Dr. Jen Gunter

Why this podcast?

One of the things the patriarchy is really pushing for is total ignorance of our bodies. I grew up with Our Bodies, Ourselves which was a hugely important text for pulling us out of that ignorance. Dr Jen Gunter is a righteous gynecologist fighting for transparency and justice.

5. Songs for the Struggling Artist

Why this podcast?

This is my other podcast where I talk more directly about feminism, fairly often. You can listen to the post that inspired The Dragoning there. My most recent feminist rant was about the TV adaption of The Power. I read my blog and sing a song related to the subject at the end. It's at least 50% patriarchy fighting content.
