Who am I?
I'm Arielle Nissenblatt, a big-time podcast listening and creating enthusiast. I'm on the community team at Descript. I write EarBuds Podcast Collective, a podcast recommendation newsletter. I host two podcasts about podcasting. And much more! I am obsessed with family history stories and podcasts. I'm definitely not an expert in the topic other than the fact that I constantly seek out family history storytelling shows.
My Show
What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?
My podcast is a podcast about podcast trailers. It's a great way to immerse yourself into the art of the short audio teaser.
What is my podcast playlist about?
I love family history stories. I am constantly searching for them and telling all of my friends / family that they must listen, too. I don't know what it is about family history that gets me... maybe it's the uncovering of hidden pasts. We'll see!
1. The Nightingale of Iran
Why this podcast?
This is a new show. The first episode drops in early February and will run for 6 weeks. From the trailer, it sounds like it's going to be absolutely gripping. It was a golden age for Jews in Iran. In the 1950s, a religious Jew – Younes Dardashti – became a national celebrity, singing at the Shah’s palace and on the radio. In the 1960s, his son Farid became a teen idol on TV. They were beloved by Iranian Muslims. But at the height of their fame, they left the country. It has always been a mystery to our host Danielle Dardashti and her sister Galeet – Why did their family leave Iran? Now, in a documentary podcast series, the sisters reveal painful secrets unspoken for generations. The Nightingale of Iran is a story that will resonate with outsiders everywhere.

2. Family Ghosts
Why this podcast?
An oldie, but a very goodie. Every house is haunted. In each episode of Family Ghosts, we investigate the true story behind a mysterious figure whose legend has followed a family for generations. Grandmothers who were secretly jewel smugglers, uncles who led double lives, siblings who vanished without a trace, and other ghostly characters who cast shadows over our lives in ways that might not be immediately obvious. We are all formed in part by our familial collections of secrets, intrigues, and myths. By engaging with each others’ legends, perhaps we can see each others’ realities more clearly. Hosted by Moth Grand Slam winner Sam Dingman, whose stories have been featured on Risk!, TBTL, Benjamen Walker’s Theory of Everything, and The Moth Radio Hour.

Why this podcast?
This is a newer show with a true crime bend to it. You'll be at the edge of your seat. Host Tristan Redman is a seasoned journalist who doesn’t believe in ghosts. When he discovers years later that subsequent occupants of the same house have been visited by the ghost of a faceless woman, he’s curious. Because it just so happens that Tristan’s childhood home is right next door to the house where his wife’s great grandmother, Naomi Dancy, was murdered in 1937 – killed by two gunshots to the face. Could there be a connection between the ghost and the murder? Tristan decides to investigate and soon finds himself going where no son-in-law should go, deep into his wife’s family history, asking questions no one wants answered.
