The best podcasts for brain candy

Who am I?

I'm Sarah, host of The Adulting With ADHD podcast. I talk to experts and patients about how ADHD relates to hormones, trauma, food/eating, and more. It was a slap in the face getting diagnosed with ADHD in my mid-30s. It was a sucker punch to learn how hormones relate to ADHD at nearly 40. I'm an ex-journalist who knows how to work Audacity. It just made sense.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

The Adulting With ADHD Podcast aims to unpack all the things that weren't covered in that glossy brochure from the doctor's office ... there's a lot of nuance that can't fit on a trifold! This playlist is what I listen to when my brain needs something shiny to chew on.

What is my podcast playlist about?

Anything based on true life is immediately interesting to me, as are shows steeped in pop culture and social commentary. I like to keep up with things, but my brain gets tired! These shows never feel like work.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Crime Writers On...True Crime Review

Why this podcast?

Originally a Serial review podcast, this is the 2nd podcast I couldn't stop listening to after getting hooked on Serial. The show has since expanded to cover true crime and pop culture across podcasts, documentaries, movies, and TV.

2. HBO's Succession Podcast

Why this podcast?

Aside from behind-the-scenes insight from the creators, Kara Swisher's conversations with corporate psychology experts, divorce attorneys to the rich, biztech movers and shakers, and more make for a smart and fun listen.

3. ICYMI

Why this podcast?

As a Xennial, I'm young enough to know how to access a podcast (and make one!), but old enough to still need a wiki for some things. Like when The Try Guys dropped Ned. This one isn't in the regular rotation, but it's my first stop for Internet culture breaking news.

4. Sounds Like A Cult

Why this podcast?

If you've ever tried to understand Disney Adults or need help processing why that Nonprofit Dream Job didn't work out for you, this one's for you. Amanda and Isa draw from their own experiences but also invite guests, like the time they had a sober comedian break down 12-Step Programs.

Putting the “cult” in culture... Do you think SoulCycle is a cult? What about the Royal Family? What about Disney Adults? Or spiritual influencers? Is Instagram itself a cult? We’re Sounds Like A Cult, an iHeart Radio Award-winning podcast that analyzes a different fanatical group every week to try and answer the big question: This ~sounds~ like a cult, but is it really? Created and hosted by New York Times-bestselling author Amanda Montell, co-hosted and produced by Chelsea Charles and Reese Oliver.
