Who am I?

I'm the co-host of Roots Music Rambler with Francesca Folinazzo. We interview artists, songwriters, producers, journalists and fans of Americana, bluegrass, country, roots, folk, blues and related genres of music with a deeper focus on the person's musical roots. We look at place, time, environment, family and more to see what influenced the music we love so. I grew up in Eastern Kentucky with regular Friday night visits to a pickin' and grinnin' session my parents participated in. By the time I was in high school, I was a country music disc jockey and had seen John Prine live 3-4 times. While I migrated away from what we now call Americana music in my teens and 20s, I've spent most of my adult life returning to my own musical roots and exploring good songs and good musicians at every turn.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Roots Music Rambler started in 2017 as a blog and eventually became three podcast episodes hosted by Francesca Folinazzo. Then the pandemic hit and the blog and podcast evaporated along with our "normal." In 2023 while pondering Tyler Childers' latest album, I thought it would be fun to talk about his evolution as an artist on a podcast. I messaged her and said, "Let's bring Roots Music Rambler back as a podcast!" And so we did. We interview artists, songwriters, producers, journalists and fans of Americana, bluegrass, country, roots, folk, blues and related genres of music with a deeper focus on the person's musical roots. We look at place, time, environment, family and more to see what influenced the music we love so.

What is my podcast playlist about?

To get inspired to co-host Roots Music Rambler, I like to listen to other Americana-focused shows to know what's going on in the industry, discover new artists, hear other perspectives on the artists we talk about and the like. So I started searching and never really found a good, curated list of shows that meet that standard. Thanks to GoodPods, I can curate my own, so I am and share it here with you!

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Americana Podcast

Why this podcast?

Who better to talk about Americana music than Robert Earl Keen? Not only does he bring the artists perspective to the table, but lets them tell their stories while weaving in their perspective on the creative process, careers and more. Great show!

2. Southern Americana

Why this podcast?

Love Southern Americana because it's bigger than just music. They talk a lot about the Americana "lifestyle" but are certainly heavy on the music and certainly very focused on the South, which makes sense. Good listen.

Americana means many things to many people. For some, it's music; for others, it's a way of life. The goal is to take you on a journey of Americana's music, people and places, especially as it relates to the South. Recorded in the scenic community of Leiper's Fork, TN, we'll bring you in-depth interviews that help you better connect to the Americana lifestyle.

3. NPR's Mountain Stage

Why this podcast?

At first, I didn't want to include NPR or other terrestrial radio driven podcasts to highlight more independent podcasters, but I continually come back to Mountain Stage to find new artists and listen to good tunes. So I did away with that requirement.

The Mountain Stage Podcast is the complete recording of the entire live show. It features songs that were cut from the radio broadcast, and it is the only place you can hear the full finale song. New episodes become available about 10 days after the premiere broadcast date. We have Spring and Fall seasons of new broadcasts, so if you heard a recent show but don’t see it at the top of the feed, just scroll back a few weeks or use the search function to find a specific artist.

4. Folk on Foot

Why this podcast?

Artists talking about where they're from and how they came to celebrate the music they learned there? Sounds a lot like what we do at Roots Music Rambler and Matthew Bannister does a great job of it! I'm not huge into folk music, but feel like I stay somewhat informed here.

5. Pacific Street Blues & Americana

Why this podcast?

A little more classic rock and blues oriented, but a fun exploration of the influence of various artists of old on the music we know and the music of today. Rick Galusha is fun to listen to.
